popular salad green from Japan, Mizuna is sometimes referred to as Chinese Potherb Mustard or Japanese Salad Green.

Although it is in the same family as other mustards, it has little if any of the characteristic peppery taste. DESCRIPTION Brassica japonica, Mizuna, is an annual or biennial which grows as a clump. The bright green leaves are heavily divided. If allowed to go to seed it bears small yellow flowers. PARTS USED Leaves. PROPERTIES A mild attractive herb, rich in vitamins and minerals.

USES OF THE HERB Culinary Use with other mild flavored salad greens to make a light and refreshing salad. Stir fry leaves with sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger and garlic. Add to clear soups Ornamental The attractive divided leaf makes it decoratively appealing in pots and as table decorations as an alternative to flowers. Suitable to be planted as an ornamental in the garden. CULTIVATION Prefers a rich, well-drained soil. For a ready supply, plant in succession. When harvesting, whole plant can be cut back to the crown and allowed to regrow. This will work for 3-4 harvesting before needing to replant. HARVEST Leaves can be collected throughout the year and used fresh. Pick a few at a time or cut the whole plant.
