Questions for the District

Where is the savings in district budgets arising from the closures of our schools in
Cowichan?

How would improvements to our Student/Educator Ratio impact our utilisation of

space?

3.

Why was the Ministry obliged to supply the Cowichan School District with modulars to
make space for FDK?

4.

How have cuts to bussing affected enrolment in our schools?

5.

How have past closures affected enrolment in our district public schools?

6.

What will replace the green spaces/community facilities neighbourhood schools

provide if they are closed, sold and developed?

7.

In choosing school closures, the Appointee is seeking to meet the continuous

demands of nancial accountability from the provincial government. What kind
of accountability does the District owe to communities whose schools are being
eliminated?

Many of our neighbourhood schools are in areas where there is future planned growth
of considerable size. Does the Board not run the risk that:

a.

School closures will shape the character of future residential development,

namely in discouraging family migration?

b.

New families will create the need to reopen schools in these areas which may
in fact mean buying dwindling land at higher prices?

Given that the closures are overwhelmingly motivated by nancial concerns, what
weight, relative to money, is given to all the educational and community reasons for
saving small schools?

10. How did the closure of Stanley Gordon School in Lake Cowichan create more
educational opportunities and resources for that community?
