-Introduction: The objective of this laboratory procedure is to create a field wound DC motor.

The fundamentals of creating this motor are the fundamentals of electromechanical motors. The use of induction creates two opposite magnetic poles, then when the commutator acts on the field magnet it creates a field which forces the motor to spin. This process creates the basis for the motor and the background needed to understand electric motors.

-Procedure: The first step in obtaining the final goal of a field wound DC motor is to obtain all the materials. The wire 50 for each the armature and the stator which are wound in a consecutive manner around the metal and equal and opposite around the stator. Then the motor and stator where mounted as shown in figure 1. The improvement of the speed, torque, and efficiency are then examine by varying outstanding parameters.

Figure 1. -Results:
1

Initial RPM 2025 Torque Efficiency 0.011 19.61%

Improved RPM 4300 0.005 21.38%

-Analysis: The original design was a success in that it worked and results show a high rpm even when compared to the speed of the other groups final results. To enhance the design to get a higher velocity the gap distance was decreased. The mass at the end of the armature was reduced to cause less inertia and increase the velocity. The next step was to analyze the winding themselves to improve upon these permanent magnets where affixed to the field to increase the power of the field. The addition of the permanents that where aligned with the field from the windings there was a noticeable increase in the velocity. Calculations: Ia = It - If Pin = I * V = 6 * 6 = 36watts Power Loss (PFl) = If2 * Rf = 3.2 * 0.9 =16.5 Armature Loss = Ia2 * Ra = 0.5 * 2.7 = 0.67 Power loss electric = 27.22 W Pmechanical = 0.03 *Pin = 0.03 * 36 = 1.08 = Pused/Pinput *100% = 21.38% Torque = T = =

-Conclusions: The overall objective of understanding DC field wound motors was achieved with in depth accuracy. The lab showed the different qualities of motors that need to be improved upon to get desired characteristics out of a motor. This lab greatly improved my knowledge of motor fundamentals. The ability to visualize how the field interacts with the stator and commutator and creates the force to drive the spinning of the motor. -Comments: none -Appendix: See lab notebook
