Total work units = 50 * 100 = 5000 Output in first 10 days : 10 * 10 = 100 Out put in 2nd 10 days : 20 * 10 = 200 so it is an AP : 100, 200, 300 . Apply sum of AP formula :

What is the ratio of A,B,C,D, if A:B = 2:3, B:C = 4:5, C:D = 6:7?

The common value of B between first two ratios are 3 and 4, so multiply the first ratio by 4 and 2nd ratio by 3. we get : 8:12:15 (A,B,C). Common values of C between this and 4th ratio is : 15 and 6. so multiply (A:B:C) by 4 and (C:D) by 10, we get new combined ratio: 32:48:60:70 or 16:24:30:35 answer.

Two numbers X and Y are chosen randomly from first 30 natural numbers, what is the chance that X^2 Y^2 is divisible by 3 ?

We have 30 * 29 such pairs. X^2 Y^2 = (X+Y) (X-Y) Either the total of X and Y must be divisible by 3 or their difference must be divisible by 3. for example, in case of 1 and 2, their total is divisible by 3.

At what time between 8 and 9, there will be a straight angle ( angle of 180 degree)?

Once at 25 past 2 and again at 55 past 2. now multiply these by 60/55, we get : 25 * 60/55 = 27.27 or 27 minutes and 16 seconds past 2 and 3. so the answer is 27 minutes, 16 seconds past 2. answer

2 trains are moving towards each other @ 60 km per hour. They are 600 m. apart. A bird is moving from one train to another and back. Its speed is 100 km per hour. When will the bird reach back the train from where it started?

06/29/09 www.afterschoool.tk

299

Solution

The bird will catch the first train in : 600 / ( 100 + 60 ) = 600/160 = 3 hours and 45 minutes. Now the bird will move back to the original train. The distance between the two trains now is : 600 ( 3.75* 120) = 600- 450 = 150 Now the bird will take : 150/(100+60) = .93 = 56 minutes. Two taps can fill a tank in 12 and 30 minutes respectively. If the taps are opened one by one for 1 minute each, in how much time the tank will be filled up starting with 1st ?

1/12 + 1/30 = 42/360 or 360/42 gives 8.3 minutes. Thus it should take at least 8.3 * 2 = 16 minutes. Let us try with 14 minutes.

06/29/09 www.afterschoool.tk AFTERSCHOOL's MATERIAL FOR PGPSE PARTICIPANTS 302

Solution.

14 minutes means 7 minute for each tap. 7/12 or first and 7 / 30 for the second Total = 294/360 Thus we have 66/360 left out which will be filled by the first tap 66/360 1/12 = 33/360, which will be filled by 2nd tap. Thus 33/360 - 1/30 = 21/360 which will now be filled by the first one. Which will take 12 * 21/360 or 7/10 minutes. Thus it has taken 9 minutes + 7/10 minutes. Answer

A mixture of milk and water has milk and water in the ratio 4:1, but we want to make the ratio to 8:1, how much milk should we add in this. Presently , we have 50 liters of this mixture?

06/29/09 www.afterschoool.tk

352

Solution

Here water will remain fixed. So let us start with water. At present water is 50 *1/5 = 10 liters. Now this water will be 1/9 of the new mixture. That means the total mixture should be 9 times the water. Thus total new mixture should be 90 litres. Out of this 10 liters will be water and 80 litres would be milk. Thus we have to add 40 litres of milk in the mixture. Answer.

06/29/09 www.afterschoool.tk

356

Solution

Our selling price is 55 after earning profit of 10%, so our cost should be : 55 * 100/110 = 50 Now deduct 20 from 50 = 30 Now deduct 50 from 60 = 10 Reverse the ratio : 10 : 30 or 1:3 For 3 kg of rice of rate 60, we should add 1 kg of rice of 20 kg. thus for 40 kg, we should add 13.33 kg of rice of rate 20.

A shopkeeper buys two types of rice, the price of first is twice the nd 2 . He mixes them in the ratio 2:3 and sell them at 48 after earning 20% profit. What are the rate of 1st and 2nd variety of rice?

06/29/09 www.afterschoool.tk

358

Solution

Let the price of the first rice = X Let the price of 2n rice = X / 2 (because the price of first rice is twice the 2nd) Ratio : 2: 3 than means multiply first by 2 and 2nd by 3 and divide by total ( 2 + 3) = 5 to get average : Thus the average is : (2x + 1.5x) / 5 Cost is 48 * 100/120 = 40 per kg.

Let us assume one umbrella selling for Re1. total selling price = 40 total profit = 10. cost 4010= 30. profit = profit/cost *100 So profit : 10/30 *100 = 33.33% answer.

Let us assume that selling price of 10 umbrellas is 30 (LCM OF 10 AND 15 IS 30). Thus selling price of one umbrella is 3. Cost of 15 umbrella is also 30, so cost of one umbrella is 2. profit is Re ( 3 2) = 1. Profitability = * 100 = 50% answer.

Solution

Let us assume that cost is 1000. he sells it for Rs. 1200 (20% profit). 15% reduction in cost = 1000 150 = 850. His new cost is 850. He gets 25% profit, so new selling price is : 850+212.5=1062.5 which is 137.5 less than 1200. If the difference is 137.5, cost = 1000 If the difference is 50,, the cost should be : 1000 * 50/137.5 = 363.6 answer 06/29/09 AFTERSCHOOL's MATERIAL 437

Solution

Let us assume that A and B invested Rs. 4 and 5. for first 3 months: 12 & 15. Now A and B withdraw Re. 1 each. Thus new amounts are 3 and 4 for 7 months. Thus 21 and 28 are the new amounts. The ratio is ((12+21): (15+28) = 33:43 Thus A will get : 33/ (33+43) * 760 = 330 answer.
