Lesson Title: Onset & Rime

Application Notes: The CVC maker is a simple to use application. It can support open ended work as pupils explore the different CVC words that can be made. A word can be added to word list in the word play activity and lists printed off. Word matching has sound support and is more focussed exercise requiring pupils to make and match a displayed word.

Pupils explore CVC words, make words using onset and rime and play matching games. Supports phonic work in Year R. Why ICT is appropriate: Allows open exploration and supports pupils to work more independently. Resources Required: CVC exe file and supporting .swf files, multimedia pc Pre-requisite knowledge/skills/understanding: Basic mouse control skills. Learning Objectives taken from the NLS W 04b - discriminating 'onsets' from 'rimes' in speech and spelling, e.g. 'tip', 'sip', 'skip', 'flip', 'chip'; identifying alliteration in known and new and invented words; W 02c - identifying and writing initial and dominant phonemes in spoken words; identifying and writing initial and final phonemes in consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, e.g. fit, mat, pan; Activities Introduction: Show the children how the program works. Make some words together as a collaborative task. Independent Work: Children can work more independently on the word matching activity as feedback is given on correct matches. Plenary: Work through some examples either making a word list or by playing the matching games. Assessment Strategy: Mainly through observation and questioning children can print out a list of words matched at the end of the word match activity. Teacher and/or support role The teacher uses a projector screen to demonstrate the programme or children gather round the computer screen. Supporting adult maybe useful to aid children or to make observations.

The teacher checks the childrens understanding by asking questions.
