Existing Conditions & Intimate Intervention


Weaver Building
Assignment: Each student will be assigned a particular site or place on or near Campus. To responsible for thoroughly and accurately documenting the site and producing a complete presentation that records, presents and analyzes the architectural qualities of that place. Creatively intervene, as a designer, with the existing conditions. Using the documentation that you have compiled, create an imagined view of the site. Concept: From existing conditions I found the building used to be one story and had gone under many restorations. I created the building as it was originally designed, but modified taking it away from rustification to being a metal and glass greenhouse. This representaion from old to new creates leisure space for the site and generally serves the purpose of being a horticulture building.

Assignment: Design a small studio for an illustrator. The studio is to be designed within a given interior volume of 12 X 12 X 18 ft.

Specialty Bookstore
Assignment: Design a small specialty bookstore. The stores will designed within a given interior volume, 32 long x 24 wide x 16 high. It will be assumed that the long dimension of the room is oriented north-south, on the line of latitude of State College. Concept: Using raised and lowered areas along with the placement of the book shelves to create unique spaces of discovery containing different categories of books.

A Polaroid Moment
Assignment: Modify something old into something new. Transform objects and/or material have been discarded into a functional and finely crafted piece of furniture. Explore the face-to-face, the embodied experience, and to frame the space of interaction. Choose one of your studio neighbors with whom you will create a working relationship and incorporating the Polaroid Camera into the design. The site shall be between your desk and the Others desk. All material must be salvaged, except electrical. Concept: To be able to shut out my chosen partner on my desire due to consistent annoyance. This is carried out by using a shutter pulley system reclaimed from an old desk to mimic the effects of a polaroid camera.

Campus Construction: Design and Build


Toolshed
Assignment: As a group oriented proect design and build a shed for the Masonry Reclamation Center, with a budget of $2,500. Concept: Reclaim structures existing on site and construct new sheds which meet the needs for a reclamation class that uses the site to sort a brick pile and fitting it into the 8X8 grid of the trees.

Assignment: In groups of 6 interpret the wedge space located on the third floor of the Stuckeman Family Building, and design as you build. Concept: Having an area to store all the unused wood, while creating distinct spaces for lounging and critique area.

Assignment: Design a kindergarten, located in Hort Woods, State College that will provide an atmosphere to foster creativity in students, especially in regards to art, music, and theatre. The design should also promote social interaction as well as provide the opportunity for students to connect with their natural surroundings. Concept: Keeping the children excited for every aspect of learning by creating each space to resemble areas of a playground.

The Boathouse
Assignment: Design a storage facility and launch on Blanchard Lake for the Penn State Crew Team. The main construction must be wood. Concept: Conveying the vital motions of the rower with his/her oar and their relationship with the water.

Skid- Steer Loader Shed


Assignment: Design and document a precisely conceived structure to store your skidsteer loader year-round. Concrete Construction: Walls are concrete with masonry units as a complement. Floor construction on lower level is concrete. Upper level is temperature controlled.

Sketching With Brick


Assignment: In groups of 8 define spaces, while trying to tie ungrouted cmu and brick to the site located on the east side of the Stuckeman Family Building, and design as you build. Concept: Cutting the space vertically and horizontally in a corbelled wave, finally breaking down to the area that must be left open for accessibility.

Assignment: Propose a design for the restoration and siplaying of the Old Main Bell as the 2009 senior class gift. The design will display the bronze bell in an exceptional way so the structure and bell work as a symbol of honoring the tradition and history of Penn State. Concept: Relocating the bell as a centerpiece above a fountain, north of Old Main to be rung on certain occassions protects it from vandalism as it is enjoyed by the public.

Silk Mill Intervention


Assignment: Design a mixed-use redevelopment within a large exisiting Silk Mill. The building was divided along its numerous open interior bays, each parcel assigned at random. Each site must accomodate a variety of residences, retail/office, and light industrial spaces. This project intends to reconstitute a cohesive living and working enivornment along the Spring Creek waterfront in Bellefonte, Pa. Concept: Fish Husbandry & Tackle Statewide Pennsylvannia is home to 15 fish hatcheries, which support the 500 million dollar fish industry. These provide recreational fishing spots, fuel tourism, employment, and construction in rural areas providing opportunity for economic growth. Introducing the idea of a small scale fish hatchery to the citizens of Belefonte to make them aware of how helpful the fish industry is for the town and states growth.

2009 NCMA Competition: Heritage As Stage


Assignment: Design an experimental theatre that interacts with its environment, the Bethlehem Steel Blast Furnace. Establishing new types of performances and interactions between the actors and the audience. Concept: Creating flowing spaces in which the audience can experience the changes of steel development. For the audience to enter the mixed spaces of concrete masonry and light steel structures to finally be lead into the final dialogue of a CMU theatre area induced with elements of the blast furnace enhancing the interactive experiences. Also with an outdoor stage area on the roof the actors and audience are given a closer insight of natural performance with the blast furnace as a back drop.

Detailed section of load bearing and non-load bearing walls taken from an intersection of the cafe and theatre. The bearing wall consists of a rotation of double wythe cmu and precast concrete enclosing the theatre, which also supports 12 hollow core plank as a main floor and an outdoor area above the theatre. A series of pillars surrounding the non-load bearing walls support the 12 hollow core plank for the cafe.
