A flood is when water has submerged some land.

There are different kinds of floods: Slow floods; is when water collects in depressions in the land, from heavy rain or monsoon. Even drainage obstruction can cause an overflow of water. Fast floods; includes flash floods, where water rapidly gushes down slopes , hills , etc.

Floods often happen in low lying areas when the

ground is saturated (can hold any more water) or it cant run off. Floods can occur if water accumulates across an impermeable surface (e.g. from rainfall) and cannot rapidly dissipate. Overflow from rivers and lakes can also cause floods. A flood can also be a result of a massive storm such as a hurricane or tsunami.

Floods can cause buildings, bridges, to get physically

damaged. It can contaminate clean water supplies. Can spread water-bourn diseases. Food such as crops can become destroyed and wash away fertile soil. They can destroy transportation links and suffocate plants.

In many countries across the world, rivers prone to

floods are often carefully managed Defenses such as levees , bunds and reservoirs are used to prevent rivers from bursting their banks. When these defenses fail, emergency measures such as sandbags or portable inflatable tubes are used. Coastal flooding has been addressed in Europe and the Americas with coastal defenses, such as sea walls, beach nourishment, and barrier islands.
