JANUARY
Our Week
Dear Parents, Please be sure to read the STAR Literacy letter that is in the red folders today. See me if you have any questions. Thank you. This week in Religion, we will read Chapter 11, Jesus Teaches Us to Pray. We will read the story, Jesus Teaches Us the Our Father and learn how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We will practice praying the Our Father prayer and make prayer headbands to remind us to pray. In Math we will identify different size containers, cover designs using pattern blocks and use objects to represent numbers to 20. We will also solve oral story problems using linking cubes and then drawing a picture. We will be tested on oral assessment #8. For this assessment we will be tested on ordinal positions. In Reading we will complete our book on Hot Rod. We will then read our next Superkid book, Us. In this book, we will work on identifying the initial /u/ sound (short u sound) and how to identify and write the capital and lowercase U. We have already learned all of the Superkids, so the stories we will read for the rest of the year will be about these 14 children. The letters we have learned so far are: C, O, G, A, D, S, L, I, T, F, E and H. The students are able to blend words using these letters. You can write words for them at home using these letters and they can sound them out and read them. This is a fun activity that you can do anytime.

Continued
In Science we will continue to identify different characteristics of objects. In Social Studies we will continue to learn about needs and wants. Have a great week, Mrs. Patsavas

Reminders
Last week I tested the students for progress reports. Progress reports will to home Thursday, January 17th. Please sign the bottom of the progress report and return it to school. The top portion is for you to keep. If you have any questions about your childs progress, please send a note or email me and we can discuss your concerns. Even thought we have had a mild winter, we go outside everyday and it is cold. They need hats, scarves and gloves. Some of them also need to practice zipping coats and tying shoes. I can see that some students have been practicing these skills at home. Thank you! If it snows, then they will need boots for recess. Parent Tip of the Week: Now that your child can read some words with the letters we have learned, have them write the words also. Make sure their strokes are from the top to bottom of the handwriting lines. Some of them try to write from bottom to top.
