Title/Subject: Estimate and Measure

I.

Objectives: The student will estimate and measure objects with nonstandard measurement forms. Language Objective: OV.1.1.7 Support spoken ideas and opinions with examples.

II.

Common Core Standards: CC.K.MD.1 Describe and compare measurable attributes. Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

III.

Materials: gummi bears, straws, worksheets, objects around class to measure

IV.

Procedure *Schema Activation: Talk about measuring with gummi bears and straws. Show the students an example using a pencil. I think that my pencil is 6 gummi bears long. Lets check. My pencil is really 7 gumi bears long. *Rest of Procedure: Have students measure the objects on their worksheet using the gummi bears and straws. Have them estimate each time before they begin to measure. *Closure: Ask students to review what we have been doing. Let them give an example of the longest object and how long it was in gummi bears and then in straws.

V.

Evaluation of Student Learning: Observe students as they estimate and measure. Ask students how they come up with their estimates. Do they use an object that they have already measures?

Reflection: Think about the extent to which the learning goals were met. Analyze YOUR teaching in terms of both successes and areas needing improvement. How might you teach the same lesson again? Share your thoughts about the experience.
