Interpretation of Highway Stripper:

The author in the poem seems to be having some sort of delusional interpretation of the day he is having while driving. He must have had a bad day, a wrong choice for which he wants to escape, but those nostalgic events deep down from his memory keeps resurfacing him unconsciously. He is old and has made some investments for his retirement. He wants to enjoy his life again till he dies. Maybe he wants to spends sometime with strippers have some pleasures without attachments and rules which he might have been living for the whole bygone years. Once while he was driving on a highway to Mexico he saw a mustang in front of him from which certain objects like straw hat, a white shoe, pleated skirt etc. was being whirled on the road. He interprets that the driver is with a stripper and is curious to have a glance of her. So he accelerates at seventy but he saw only one person at the wheel: a man about forty, looking only at the road with a football radio on. He was unsure about what he saw at that absolute second so he looked again and again on the rear view mirror but there was only a man chilling the ride. He was confused and doubted if the man was doing the stripping or was he dressed like a woman for some kind of show and that he was discarding the costumes. He also introspects if all that activity he saw was some kind of some illusion something that he was desired, like an emptiness resurfacing his unconscious mind. -by Koj Tado BA (H).
