Audit of Household Appliance Energy Consumption and Carbon Dioxide Emissions in Maramag, Bukidnon.

Adviser: Dr. Jose Hermis P. Patricio The study generally aimed to determine energy consumption and CO2 emissions from appliances of households in Poblacion, Maramag, Bukidnon. Primary data were collected last December 2011 using a pre-tested survey questionnaire involving 98 purposively selected household respondents. Refrigerators of household respondents significantly had the highest energy consumption of 5080.74 kWh per month. This is probably due to the long hours of usage of this appliance which normally reached up to 24 hours daily. This was followed by rice cookers, TVs, and flat irons. On the other hand, cell phones, laptops, and blowers consumed the least amount of electricity. Meanwhile, rice cooker significantly emitted the largest amount of CO2 into the atmosphere at the rate of about 59 kg CO2 per month per unit. This was followed by refrigerator, electric stove, and flat iron with mean monthly emissions per unit of about 41, 29, and 18 kg CO2 respectively. Most of the household respondents had a household size of four or less and either reached or finished college. About half of them earned an average monthly income of less than phP10,000.00 while about 39% earned between PhP11,000.00-20,000.00. On the average, one in every five households in the study area had a monthly electric bill of more than PhP901.00. A great majority of them were aware of global warming and some environmental laws such as the Philippine Clean Air Act, the Climate Change Act, and the Renewable Energy Act.

It is recommended that the local government unit of Maramag, Bukidnon together with FIBECO should spearhead the conduct of information, education and communication campaign to raise public awareness on the economic and environmental significance of conserving energy especially through the wise purchase and use of electrical appliances in the households. Through reduction of energy consumption, climate change could be mitigated.
