What is Safety Culture? Safety culture refers to the enduring value, priority and commitment placed on safety by every person and every group at every level of the organisation. It reflects the individual and organisational attitudes, norms and behaviours related to the safe provision of air navigation services. A postive safety culture which places a high value on safety will help to prevent accidents and enable the implementation of an effective Safety Management System (SMS). By measuring the safety climate of an organisation one will be able to make predictions and take action to realise sustainable safety levels. What kind of safety culture does your organisation have? CANSO Safety Culture Resources The CANSO Safety Standing Committee, aims to assist all CANSO ANSP Members to measure and improve their safety culture. To realise this aim CANSO is conducting a study and developing a series of tools. The SSC seeks to develop: A ready-to-go Safety Climate Survey Safety Climate Survey Guidelines A Safety Culture Model and Enhancement Process Communication Tools Such tools: helps ANSPs understand where they stand in relation to the CANSO expert norm range provides access to lessons learned and best practices provides standardised and harmonised measurement across CANSO Member ANSPs are linked to the CANSO Safety Management System Standard of Excellence are cost-effective are easy to use Looking to the Future The SSC aims to: Release a Safety Culture Improvement Guide learn how other ANSPs and organisations have improved their safety cultures Develop more safety culture assessment tools - move beyond surveys to understand your organisations safety culture Expand the CANSO/University Partnership - create more ANSP/university pairs for mutual support in conducting surveys and research
