Context: Mongol invasions ended or interrupted many of the great empires of the postclassical period and also extended the world network that had increasingly defined the period. Significance: The Mongols established links to civilizations that helped aid in the spread of ideas, innovations, beliefs, goods, etc. Themes: social- relation between different societies; cultural-spread of ideas, beliefs economical-trade

Shamanistic Beliefs (pg 323)- animistic beliefs of northern Asia Context: Although he himself followed the shamanistic beliefs of his ancestors, all religions were tolerated in his empire. Significance: Chinggis Khan was very tolerant of other religious and didnt impose his own religion on his empire. Themes: cultural- religious belief

Despotism ( pg 327)-absolute power or control; an absolute or autocratic government Context: Claims that the Tartars were responsible for Russian despotism, either tsarist of Stalinist, are clearly overstated. Significance: Mongol influence led to changes in Russian military organization and tactics and in the political style Russian rulers. Themes: political-absolute power

Secret religious sects (pg 334 )- a secret subdivision of a larger group Context: Secret religious sects, such as the White Lotus Society, were dedicated to overthrowing the dynasty. Significance: The forming of these secret religious sects was a sign of dynastic decline. Themes: social-organization; cultural-religious cult
