CHAPTER 5

ECONOMIC SECTOR
5.1

Agriculture

Toledo City has about 20,125.33 has. of land devoted for agriculture.
These lands used

for agriculture are mostly hilly with steep slopes. The

topsoil is most shallow, with low organic matter content and natural fertility.
Flat lands devoted to agricultural production are small and scattered.
Marginal lands are utilized for crop production despite its unsuitability to
agricultural production. There is a general observation that an agricultural
land is not fully utilized. While most farms are very small and marginal
lands are being used for crop production, large tracts of land remain idle.

1.

Area and Production, Major Crops

1) Crop Yield and Production

Corn and banana are the major crops, followed by vegetables,

rootcrops, rice and other crops. Most of the rice farmers are in coastal
barangays while most of the corn growers are in upland barangays.

a.1 Rice Production

Data obtained from the City Agriculture Office shows that the total
land are planted to rice is approximately 500 Hectares or effective areas;
340 hectares of which are irrigated while 123 hectares are actually irrigated.
However, CAO indicated that there are 37

hectares engaged with rice

production situated in upland areas while there are about 60 has potential
for rice farming. Total production reached 80 to 100 cavans per hectare per
cropping for irrigated areas and 50 to 60 cavans per hectare for non-irrigated
or rainfed areas. Upland farms production reaches from 30 to 50 canvans
per hectare. Irrigated farms have two (2) croppings in a year, usually the
first cropping falls on the months of April to September and second
cropping from October to March.

a.2 Corn Production

Corn

is

the

major

agricultural

crop

in

Toledo

City.

The

City

Agriculture Office record show that there are 3,500 hectares effective area
planted to corn. However, there are also 2,500 hectares which are potential
for

corn

production.

Actual

area planted

to

corn

is

much

larger

comparatively. Most upland farms including those witin the ACMDC mining
area including kaingin farms in the hinterlands are planted with corn. At
certain period of time, corn is being intercropped with rootcrops such as
camote, cassava, legumes and mongo. Average corn production ranges from
20-50 sacks for the native variety, 60 to 80 sacks for open pollinated
varieties and 90 to 120 sacks for hybrid type per hectare for every harvest.
