Ask your partner to explain how if he or she would find the average of 10, 5, 20, and 5. What is the average height of you and your partner? Find out how tall you each are. Add those heights together and divide by 2. Read your partner this sentence: The average temperature for July is 88 degrees. Ask your partner to replace the word average with a synonym.

Im going to name pairs of places. Tell me which has a greater depth. Say the answer together. An ocean or a pool? A ditch or a well? Im going to read you a little story. After I have finished, answer the question I ask you. Alexis and Heather are having a contest. They are trying to see who can dive deeper. Alexis dives down over 19 feet. Heather dives down 17 feet. Who reached a greater depth?

Im going to name some animals. If an animal lives in the desert, say Yes. If it does not, say No. a scorpion a lion a lizard a monkey
Listen as I say the following chant. Then lets say the chant together. Cactuses live in deserts! Theyre dry! Snakes live in deserts! Theyre dry! Continue the chant, with students naming other plants and animals that live in deserts.

Lets all imagine we are volcanoes that have recently erupted. First, demonstrate what a volcano sounds like when it is erupting. Then demonstrate what a volcano that is not erupting sounds like. Imagine you were trying to hold in a sneeze. You had been holding it in for a while, but you couldnt do it any longer. Show what happened when the sneeze erupted out of you.

Imagine the index and middle fingers on your right hand are one runner and the index and middle fingers on your left hand are another runner. Use both hands to show how one runner can outrun the other. Show how fast you would have to run in a race to outrun a turtle, a snail, and a clam.

Explain to your partner the difference between high tides and low tides. Point out that water comes farthest ashore at high tides and goes farthest out at low tides. Ask your partner if he or she has ever heard of or experienced riptides. Discuss how you should swim out of the current if you are caught in a riptide.
