Gregorio Zara

Gregorio Zara is one of the most famous Filipino inventors. He was born in Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1926. He received his Masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and in 1930 graduated with a Doctorate of Physics from Sorbonne University. On September of 1954, he successfully tested and flew his alcohol-fuelled airplane engine at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Among all his inventions and contributions, the three most notable are: his discovery of the Zara Effect, which is the physical law of kinetic resistance; second is his invention of a propeller-cutting machine; and third, his design of a microscope with a collapsible stage. He also invented the videophone, a two-way television telephone patented in 1955, and he helped design a robot called Marex X-10. Among his awards are the Presidential Diploma of Merit and the Presidential Gold Medal and Diploma of Honour for Science and Research. This man is truly a great Filipino genius in the field of science.
