Big Idea: A group of English colonists, called Puritans, founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony Key Vocabulary: Puritan a member of the Church of England who settled in North America to follow Christian beliefs in a more pure way. charter an official paper in which certain rights are given by a government to a person, group, or business. common- an open area where sheep and cattle graze; village green. specialize- to work at one kind of job and do it well

town meeting- an assembly in the New England colonies in which male landowners could take part in government. public office- a job a person is elected to. Important Points:

1. John Winthrop led a settlement of Puritans to Massachusetts Bay and served as the colonys first governor. 2. Puritans founded the first community schools in the colonies. 3. The meetinghouse served as the center of the village, a place where church services and town meetings were held.

Big Idea: Events led some Massachusetts Bay colonists to form new colonies nearby (Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire.) 1. Roger Williams founded Providence after being expelled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 2. Anne Hutchinson was found guilty of sedition and later founded a settlement near Providence. 3. Thomas Hooker was instrumental in writing the Fundamental Orders for the colony of Connecticut. 4. New Hampshire was founded by settlers seeking better farmland. 5. Land disputes between settlers and Native Americans led to war.

Big Idea: New Englands economy depended mostly on resources found in the ocean (whaling/fishing) and in the forests (trading/shipbuilding.) Important Points:

1. The fishing and whaling industries brought great prosperity to New England in the 1700s. 2. Ships followed triangular trade routes in carrying raw materials from the Americas, manufactured goods from England, and slaves from Africa.

3. The shipbuilding industry was very successful in New England because lumber was plentiful.
