2nd Lesson Script Notes (Imagine by Alison Lester)

Connection to previous lesson: Read Imagine by Alison Lester, identified nouns, grouped them under types of nouns (animal, person, place, thing), used adjectives to describe them, made up sentences. Show children on IWB a scene from Alison Lesters Imagine Select a student to roll the dice (or just choose Who, What, Where if it doesnt land on appropriate question) Who (animal, person), what (thing), where (place). Circle their chosen noun on the IWB (eg What the ocean, coral, seaweed; Who-the fish) Ask what qualities (adjectives) they would use to describe the noun. What does it look like, feel like? Write ideas on whiteboard Choose another student to roll dice, select questions, circle it on IWB Ask children what adjectives they would use to describe it? Ask what else can you describe in the scene? Explain to children, if I wanted to write a sentence about these details I could put this information in a sentence and use adjectives to stretch the sentences and make them interesting. Eg: Instead of just I saw a fish. I can say: I saw a friendly, colourful fish. I saw a friendly and colourful fish splashing in the blue ocean. He was playing with an orange and white fish [and] they were hiding behind some green seaweed. Mention use of joining words I saw a dolphin. I saw a friendly, silver dolphin playing in the curly, blue waves. He was playing with a funny, wobbly jellyfish [and] a big, grey shark.

Ask children to choose a character from the scene to write two interesting sentences describing their character using adjectives.

Write starters on whiteboard: I saw.. OR I am. (Imagine you are that character)

Give verbal example: I am a friendly and colourful fish. My home is a smooth, round shell and I like to sleep under a blanket of soft, green seaweed. I play with happy, silver dolphins and squishy, wobbly jellyfish. I stay away from cranky, slippery eels, and scary sharks. Write prompt questions on whiteboard: What do you look like, feel like? Who are you with? Where are you? What are you doing? What else is around you that you can describe (using nouns and adjectives)? Ask children what important things we need to remember when we write sentences? Capital letters for start of a sentence, full stops at end of a sentence, spaces between words, commas to separate ideas (adjectives two together). Use joining words (conjunctions) to join two sentences together to make it interesting. At desks give children adjective words, photocopy of scene to share, lead pencils, paper, erasers, textas. Tell children to write their name on piece of writing paper. Reiterate main points: choose a character (noun) from the illustration and use adjectives to describe the noun. Use joining words to make sentences interesting, capital letters for start of a sentence, full stops at end of a sentence, spaces between words, commas to separate ideas (adjectives two together). Tell children when they are finished to underline adjectives and nouns in different colours. Ext: children to write some more sentences on their character or choose another character to write about. Ext: children to read their sentences to a friend or the class. Recap on lesson: Say what we have learnt today: Identified types of nouns, adjectives from illustrations in a story.
