I KNOW MY RIGHTS!: Practicing the Bill of Rights with Scenarios

Terminal Objective: In the provided graphic organizer, SWBAT determine in writing whether the right being discussed in each
scenario is protected by one of the amendments in the Bill of Rights.

Content Standards:
Strand Three: Civics and Government Concept 3: Functions of Government
PO 2. Examine how the Constitution guarantees due process of law through Constitutional mandates and Amendments. a. Constitutional mandates ( e.g., the right of habeas corpus, no bill of attainder, and the prohibition of ex post facto laws)

Language Standards:
Listening and Speaking: Standard Four: The student will analyze text for expression, enjoyment, information, and understanding. HI-14: Drawing conclusions from information implied or inferred in a literary selection. Writing:
Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (AZ.112.WHST.4) Produce clear and coherent functional writing (e.g., formal letters, envelopes, procedures, labels, timelines, graphs/tables, experiments, maps, caption, charts, diagrams) in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (AZ.11-12.WHST.4)

Time: One Class Period (50 minutes) Task Analysis: Blooms Level Knowledge Time: 5 minutes Sub-Objective SWBAT list in writing three amendments covered in the Bill of Rights lecture from the previous day. SWBAT orally list one amendment to the Bill of Rights. Teaching Strategy Bellwork: On a half-sheet of paper the student will write a single paragraph response to the writing prompt. Group Discussion: The students will respond to being called on randomly. The students will read aloud their bellwork responses. PowerPoint Practice Slides: The five scenarios in the PowerPoint are an opportunity to practice applying their knowledge of the Bill of Rights to novel situations. Active Student Participation Students will individually write their response on a half-sheet of paper. Teacher will walk the aisles of the room to check for understanding and participation. As each student responds to being called on, the they will be asked to make any necessary corrections in writing to their bellwork responses. This activity serves as a check for understanding and participation. Intermittent Closure/Final Closure: After each scenario, the students will identify in their graphic organizer which amendment is relevant to the scenario, as well as whether that right is protected or not in the Bill of Rights. The first scenario is meant to be done together as a class to warm them up. After it is presented and discussed, the students will have the chance to ask any clarification questions.

Homework: Individually, students will complete their own persuasive campaign ad using what they learned in class about rhetorical strategies and employing examples from the real political ads that they observed. The assignment will be due the following class period.
