Lesson 1 GO-GROW-GLOW Foods Curriculum Expectations: Students will describe the benefits of healthy food choices, physical activity, and healthy bodies. Objectives: Students will learn about GO-GROW-GLOW foods. Suggested Outline Section 1: Introduce Todays Lesson Section 2: Discussion/Background Information Section 3: Activity #1, #2, #3 Section 4: Conclusion Section 1: Introduce Todays Lesson Today we will learn about GO-GROW-GLOW foods by completing various activities. Section 2: Discussion/Background Information Benefits of Healthy Food Choices, Physical Activity, and Healthy Bodies Ask the students, what are some of the benefits of: o healthy food choices, o physical activity, and o healthy bodies? Examples: Essential for proper growth and development Provides essential nutrients and energy Helps to maintain a healthy weight Strengthen heart, lungs and muscles Helps people look and feel good Perform better in school Perform better physically GO-GROW-GLOW Foods Grain products provide carbohydrates and give us energy to go (i.e. run, jump, kick a ball) GO-GROW-GLOW Foods Building Blocks Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, and Oral Health A Lesson Plan Module for Teachers Junior Kindergarten Grade 6 Healthy Eating Grade 3 Lesson 1 Grade 3, Lesson 1 Healthy Eating 2 Milk products and Meat & Alternatives provide protein, calcium and iron, which help us grow! Milk products and meat & alternatives both provide protein. Milk products key nutrients are protein and calcium. Meat & Alternatives key nutrients are protein and iron. GO-GROW-GLOW Foods Vegetables and Fruit provide vitamins A & C, which help our skin and hair glow! Vitamin A helps keep our skin healthy, and helps us see at night. Vitamin C helps cuts heal. Section 3: Activity Activity #1 GO-GROW-GLOW Foods Have them draw pictures of their favourite activities around the Grain Products that give us energy to GO. Have them draw pictures of their growing bodies (i.e., muscles, bones) around the Milk Products and Meat & Alternatives that help us GROW. Have them draw pictures of classmates headshots, including various skin and hair types, around the Vegetables & Fruit that help us GLOW.

` Activity #2 GO-GROW-GLOW Foods Divide class into 6 small groups (breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack) and write the four food groups on a piece of chart paper. Review: breakfast has food from 3 food groups; lunch and supper have food from 4 food groups; snacks have food from 2 food groups. In a day, we should have at least: o 5 servings from the Grain Products food group o 5 servings from the Vegetables & Fruit food group o 3 servings from the Milk Products food group o 2 servings from the Meat & Alternatives food group or 5-5-3-2 Give each group an incomplete meal/snack (Vegetables & Fruit, GLOW, food group is missing) from the activity sheet. Instruct each group to add their favourite food from the Vegetables & Fruit (GLOW) food group to complete the meal/snack. Example: (GP-Grain Products; MP-Milk Products; MA-Meat & Alternatives; VF-Vegetables & Fruit) Lunch tuna sandwich (GP, MA), pudding (MP), and pear slices (VF). Have each group present their complete meal/snack, stating their chosen food from the Vegetables & Fruit (GLOW) food group. As each group presents, place a check-mark under the food group for each food listed. Answer = GP 5 (out of 5), FV 6 (out of 5), MP 4 (out of 3), MA 2 (out of 2). The total is the correct number of servings from all four food groups that we should eat in one day (5-5-3-2)! Grade 3, Lesson 1 Healthy Eating 3 Activity #3 Placemats Instruct each student to create a GO-GROW-GLOW placemat using words and drawings. Students can weave construction paper to make the background for the artwork. The theme of the placemat could be: How Healthy Food Choices and Physical Activity help Build Strong and Healthy Bodies. Distribute Canadas Food Guide to Healthy eating to everyone in the class. Have students come up with a slogan for their artwork and report back to the class. Encourage students to include nutrient-dense foods and examples of their favourite physical activities. Students can include their favourite GO-GROW-GLOW foods. Laminate for home use or display the placemats. Section 4: Conclusion Today we learned about GO-GROW-GLOW foods by completing various activities.
