Telecommunication equipment, file servers, computer networks, information systems, other computing and telecommunication resources, and other equipment such as scanners, digital cameras, video projectors, and video cameras, and the Internet, are viewed as instructional tools for learning. Policies and procedures outlined in the Code of Student Conduct also apply to the use of all technology resources at school. Using technology resources includes using a single computer, a computer on a local area network, a computer on the wide area network, or a computer to access the Internet. This set of guidelines is intended to assist users in following established practices and procedures to use technology resources in a responsible and productive manner. Expectations: Any student who is a user of the school system provided technology resources is expected to use the resources for educational purposes only. Any use of the school system provided technology resources and the Internet should always reflect academic honesty, high ethical standards,and moral responsibility.

Acceptable Use a) Protecting private information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, or passwords b) Using appropriate language when sending public messages, private messages, or posting materials on web sites c) Respecting all copyright laws d) Respecting network limitations when sending or receiving information e) Using computers for their intended educational purposes only f) Accessing the Internet only while under the direct supervision of a teacher or other school staff member Unacceptable Use a) Damaging computers, computer systems, or computer networks b) Trespassing in anothers files, folders, or work c) Using the network for commercial purposes d) Wasting limited resources e) Claiming to represent the the County's School System

f) Using the network for any illegal activity, including violation of copyright or other licenses or contracts g) Degrading or disrupting equipment or system performance h) Gaining intentional access to obscene, lewd, pornographic or inappropriate material i) Using abusive, profane, or obscene language in either public or private messages j) Posting anonymous messages k) Causing undue congestion of the network through lengthy downloads of files, or by engaging in idle activities l) Vandalizing the data of another user m) Identifying ones self with another persons name n) Stealing data, equipment, or intellectual property Saftey online A federal law, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), was created to help protect kids online. It's designed to keep anyone from obtaining a child's personal information without a parent knowing about it and agreeing to it first. COPPA requires websites to explain their privacy policies on the site and get parental consent before collecting or using a child's personal information, such as a name, address, phone number, or Social Security number. The law also prohibits a site from requiring a child to provide more personal information than necessary to play a game or participate in a contest. But even with this law, your kids' best online protection is you. By talking to them about potential online dangers and monitoring their computer use, you'll help them surf the Internet safely. What Is Copyright? Did you know that whenever you write a poem or story or even a paper for your class, or a drawing or other artwork, you automatically own the copyright to it. Copyright is a form of protection given to the authors or creators of original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works. What that means is that, as the author of the work, you alone have the right to do any of the following or to let others do any of the following: make copies of your work; distribute copies of your work; perform your work publicly (such as for plays, film, dances or music);

display your work publicly (such as for artwork, or stills from audiovisual works, or any material used on the Internet or television); and make derivative works (including making modifications, adaptations or other new uses of a work, or translating the work to another media). In general, it is illegal for anyone to do any of the things listed above with a work created by you without your permission, but there are some exceptions and limitations to your rights.
