Constantin Brncui.

Epic stone from Tg Jiu

Around the genius of Constantin Brncui and his works have been created a legend, a myth that stretches from his native village until Bucharest, Craiova, Trgu-Jiu, Paris, crossing the ocean in New York, Philadelphia, virtually wherever his works and his commentators are. In the sculptural complex from Targu-Jiu, realised "to glorify the memory of Romanian heroes who sacrificed themselfs in war"1 and inaugurated on October 27, 1938, the symbol is the carrier of some meanings how are coming from our archaic space both spiritual and mythological forms2. Raised as a tribute in the memory of those who have sacrificed themselfs for freedom and justice, the assembly unit from Targu-Jiu and the structure of each individual piece, fully expresses this goal. The Table of Silence is located near the place where the sacrifice for our country has been made, like a meditation altar with ancestral shades. On the eastern axis raise The Kiss Gate, like a triumphal arch dedicated to victorious soldiers, and finally is reasing as a funeral pillar but also as a symbol of glory and immortality, the Endless Column, the Obelisk of history of the Romanian people. Between this three objectives, uniting them, is the Way of heroes, considered a Via Sacra of Romanian heroism. Constantin Brncui had kept the Apostles church, all ready existing building in the monumental assembly location. True epic realised in bronze and stone3, the work of Constantin Brncui honors the heroic death but also brings praise to everlasting life. The Table, The Gate and The Column teach us how a people can travel over the centuries and universality. These three huge signs, real milestones between heaven and earth, between the ideal and existence, were placed in the memory of a specific time, crucial in Romanian history, managed to stand until today as witness of its uninterrupted flow.
