This is symbolised in the beginning of the film, when extreme close-ups are taken of skin and individual pieces of hair, which are accompanied by a strident noise when shown falling to the ground. An individuals place in society is determined at birth, even the exact time of death can be calculated. This large weight on genetic identity leaves Irene a victim of the system. Irene suffers from an imperfect heart and is denied her dream of space travel, forced to live her days on a satellite circling the sun. Her occupation in Gattaca is to identify its flaws, which is appropriate since she, herself, is obsessed with her own imperfections. In Gattacas society, everyone has their lives and their roles already mapped out due to their genetics. Irene is expected to accept this pre-determined future and never question it; she does this until Vincent enters her life. Irene is liberated from selfdoubt through Vincents example. Irene is first a prisoner of a society where people have lost the belief that they have the power to create their own futures. However, Vincent dares to become a man of his own destiny. He realizes that There is no gene for fate, and through the power of belief, strong will, and effort, he shows Irene that a person can transform ones life circumstances.
