READING COMPREHENSION Read the following article and answer the questions which follow: A, B, C or D The Choking Dog "Come on, come on, move it!" Joanne beat impatiently on the steering wheel of her Mercedes sports car. How stupid to get caught up in the rush hour! She had planned to leave work early this afternoon, at three o'clock, to give herself a chance to relax and have a bath before going out to a meeting of her local tennis club. But just at ten to three a client had arrived, and it was two hours before she had finished dealing with the man. When she came out of her office, all the other staff in the Highlight Advertising Agency had already left. Now she was stuck in a traffic jam in central Birmingham at 5:30, and at 6:30 she was expected to be chairing a meeting of the tennis club. There would be no time for any hot bath. Ahead of her, the traffic was moving at last, and she swung quickly out into the centre lane to turn right, and raced the last half-mile through the quiet suburban streets to her house. Pulling up on the driveway, she leapt out of the car and ran for the house. As she opened the door, she nearly tripped over Sheba, who was standing behind it.

"Hey, Sheba, hello," she said, bending down to stroke the large Alsatian dog's head, "I've got no time for you now, but I'll take you out as soon as I get back from the tennis club." It was then that she noticed something worrying about the dog. Sheba seemed to be coughing or choking, her stomach pumping repeatedly as if she was trying to vomit something up. She was obviously in real discomfort and could hardly breathe; her sad eyes gazed up at Joanne helplessly. "Oh damn, this is all I need now," said Joanne to herself, dropping her briefcase and bending down to take a closer look, "a sick dog, today of all days!" On closer examination, Sheba did look very sick, and Joanne realized she would have to take her down to the vet immediately. Luckily, the vet's surgery was only a few streets away, and Joanne quickly loaded the dog, still coughing and choking, into her car for the short drive. When she got there, the surgery was just about to close for the day. Luckily, Dr. Sterne had not left yet, and when he saw the state of Sheba, he brought her quickly into his office. "It looks like something is stuck in her throat," said Dr. Sterne. It shouldn't take me too long to get it out." "Listen, doctor, I'm really in a rush to get to a meeting -- can I leave her with you, and go and get changed? I'll be back in ten minutes to pick her up, then I'll take her on to the meeting with me. Is that OK?" "Sure," said the doctor. "You get going. I'll see you in ten minutes." Joanne jumped back into her car again, and made the quick trip round to her house in a couple of minutes. As she was once more entering the hallway, the phone on the table by the door began to ring. She picked it up, annoyed by this additional interruption to her plans. "This is Dr. Sterne," said an anxious voice. "Is that you, Joanne?" "Of course it's me," said Joanne, surprised at the sound of his voice, "no-one else lives here." "I want you to get right out of that house immediately," said the doctor's voice. "Right now. I'm coming round right away, and the police will be there any time now. Wait outside for us." The phone went dead. Joanne stared at it. She was confused, but she was also a little frightened by the obvious fear in the voice of the doctor. She replaced the receiver, then quickly backed out of the door and ran into the street. At that moment, a police car with its lights flashing swung round the corner and screeched to a stop outside the house. Two policemen got out. After briefly checking that she was the owner of the house, they ran into the house through the still open door, without explaining anything. Joanne was by now completely confused and very frightened. Then the doctor arrived. "Where's Sheba? Is she OK?" shouted Joanne, running over to his car. "She's fine, Joanne. I extracted the thing which was choking her, and she's OK now." "Well what's this all about? Why are the police in my house?" Just then, the two policemen reappeared from the house, half-carrying a white-faced figure, a man in a dark grey sweater and jeans, who, it seemed, could hardly walk. There was blood all over him. "My God," said Joanne, "how did he get in there? And how did you know he was there?" "I think he must be a burglar," said the doctor. "I knew he was there because when I finally removed what was stuck in Sheba's throat, it turned out to be three human fingers. I don't think he's a very happy burglar." Do they really care? Teenager Christiana Tugwell and a small band of fellow school-age environmentalists have spent the past five months fighting proposals being put forward by the property developer, Countryside Residentials, to build 66 luxury detached houses in an area of woodland. They have received support at their protest camp from other residents who want to save the wood and the wildlife it contains. They have built a network of underground tunnels, which they will occupy to prevent the developers from starting work. Countryside Residential said it had been careful to preserve wildlife on the site, employing ecologists to do surveys and spending tens of thousands of pounds protecting animal and plant life. I began organizing the local campaign when I realized just how many local residents were against the developments. They were writing letters of protest to the council but this was simply not enough. So in order to put more pressure on the council and to raise national awareness, I started camping on the proposed development site. I was the ring-leader and had to bully some friends to join me. They werent keen on sleeping rough and neither was I, but something had to be done. My mums initial reaction was are you sure you want to do this? After the first week she sent some friends to try to make me come home. They said Id get into trouble, but I was determined to stay. I even spent three nights at the camp on my own. Even though she wanted me home, mum was always supportive and even brought us vegetarian sausages. Mum and I dont always see eye to eye on everything. But we agree that as long as what I want to do is not completely stupid, she lets me do it. Im very stubborn and if I think I can do it, normally I can. She worries about possible violence from the people trying to evict us and so do I, but there wont be any violence on our part. You could soon be stepping out decked in salmon and cod, reports Max Glaskin. Snakeskin might be all the rage in designer collections this spring, but it could be replaced by something even more scaly. Several Scandinavian designers have just announced a new luxury fabric to rival the finest leathers, silks and furs. No longer will snakeskin, lizard and crocodile be the preferred hides of exotic materials, because theres a new kid on the block: fish skin. The first fish leather tannery in Sweden is now up and running, offering its unique products to the worlds top fashion houses in the hope that they will scale the heights of chic in the new millennium. Turning old fish into desirable dress material is not easy. It takes three days, starting with a wash to remove most of the fat and dirt. The scales are lifted and then the skin is pickled. The way we get rid of the offensive smell is a secret, says Bergholz, joint owner of Sea Skin Scandinavia. Yvonne Eriksson, of the Finnish design company Fero, meanwhile, has been making shirts and jackets from fish leather, mostly from turbot and Nile perch caught in Lake Victoria. Its a great alternative to more traditional exotic skins, she says. Fish leather gives a more elegant impression than traditional leather and its at least as strong. Reality TV - media hype or genuine hit? Tony Christian, member of the media watchdog group Airwave and Jenny Doyle, winner of last years Big Brother are discussing reality shows. Jenny: Its been a lot of fun since I left the house. Lots of interviews on radio and TV and people recognise me wherever I go. It hasnt completely changed my life, though. No offers to present TV programmes, but then thats not why I went on in the first place. Id seen earlier series and thought, Shes in it for the money, or He wants to be a star, and I thought the programme could be so much more than that. I thought it could show what the young people of Britain are really like right now so I went on just to be myself, really.

Tony: But in real life we dont decide who we want to get rid of and then vote on it. Its that anti-social aspect that worries me and other members of Airwave and similar organisations. Jenny: Well, having to nominate your housemates isnt easy because you become very emotionally attached to the other people. But we all knew that at the end of the day it was a game. And I disagree with you, its not supposed to be real life, but rather a TV programme, and Im sure everyone watching is aware of that. Tony: Maybe when youre talking about adult viewers. But what concerns me is very young viewers. There have been reports of children as young as seven or eight years old playing Big Brother in the playground and using the game to bully other children, by nominating them and then voting them out. That can be a very hurtful experience at that age. Jenny: Well, thats not something I would defend. But, doesnt it also teach them a lot about making friends, about showing tolerance and giving other people their own space? Tony: What we propose is tighter controls over times of broadcast rather than a complete ban. That means broadcast when we can reasonably expect very young viewers to be in bed. Circle the most appropriate option: 1. Jenny has a) been interviewed a few times since the programme ended b) never presented a TV programme yet c) rarely been recognised in the street d) decided to change her life completely 2. Why did Jenny go on the television programme? a) to teach people something b) to make money first of all c) to become a star like others d) to learn about other young people 3. What worries Tony about reality TV? a) People develop very strong relationships on these programmes. b) The programmes should be more educational. c) People have to behave in ways that he disapproves of. d) The voting system is not politically correct. 4. What does Jenny say about nominating the other housemates? a) She found it fun because it was all a game. b) The relationships they developed made it hard. c) She felt emotionally weak during the programme. d) It was difficult because it took place at the end of the day. 5. Jenny a) does not share Tonys opinion on anything b) prefers the TV programme to real life c) does not find real life and the reality show the same d) is sure that everyone watching the show thinks the same as her 6. Tony gives an example of how Big Brother can a) be used negatively by children. b) give children the wrong idea about real life. c) get children into trouble with their parents. d) cause pain to people.

7. Jenny thinks that these programmes teach young people a) to protect themselves from strangers b) to tell who is a real friend c) to be polite d) to develop useful social skills 8. What does Airwave want? a) A complete ban on this kind of programme b) A ban on these programmes in the early evening c) A ban on programmes involving young children d) A more reasonable choice of programmes on TV LISTENING COMPREHENSION TEST OBSERVATION We can learn a great deal about behaviour by simply observing the actions of others. However, everyday observations are not always made carefully or systematically. Most people do not attempt to control or eliminate factors that might influence the events they are observing. As a consequence, incorrect conclusions are often drawn. Consider, for example, the classic case of Clever Hans. Hans was a horse that was said by his owner, a German mathematics teacher, to have amazing talents. Hans could count, do simple addition and subtraction (even involving fractions), read German, answer simple questions (What is the lady holding in her hands?), give the date, and tell the time. Hans answered questions by tapping with his forefoot or by pointing with his nose at different alternatives shown to him. His owner considered Hans to be truly intelligent and denied using any tricks to guide his horses behaviour. And, in fact, Clever Hans was clever even when the questioner was someone other than his owner. In 1904, a scientific commission was established with the goal of discovering the basis for Hanss abilities. The scientists found that Hans was no longer clever if either of two circumstances existed. First, Hans did not know the answers if the questioner also did not know the answers. Second, Hans was not very clever if he could not see his questioner. A slight bending forward by the questioner would start Hans tapping, and any movement upward or backward would cause Hans to stop tapping. / / CODE: __________________ - VIII TIME: 15 min. 26. 2011. Hollywood Ranch Hollywood, the most famous town in America, got its name in 1886 when a retired couple moved to California and built a ranch. The movies hadn't yet been born and the couple chose the location because they liked the wide open spaces around the small but bustling city of Los Angeles. Three years later moving pictures were invented in London when William Friese-Greene gave the first demonstration of a Kinematograph. But it was the Lumiere brothers in Paris who gave the first public demonstration before a paying audience in 1895. Ironically, they thought movies had no commercial use.

The first narrative film that used actors was called "The Great Train Robbery". People went to see the film in their thousands. Each person paid five cents for admission: this is why the first cinemas were called "Nickel Odeons." The popularity of movie boomed and the film companies joined together in order to get patent rights as a way of protecting their product. But pirate companies began to make films of their own outside the law. To avoid prosecution these film makers packed up and moved across country. They settled in a small town called Hollywood. By 1914 this town had become the biggest film factory in the world. Other companies moved there because the sunny climate was conducive to shooting outdoors. The surrounding environment was also perfect for making westerns, the first and most popular American film genre. The early Hollywood artists were regarded with disrespect by many people. The cinema was the upstart medium and many people resented its overnight success. READING COMPREHENSION TEST The Robot Wine Waiter Would you like to be served in a restaurant by a robot waiter? This is what happened when a robot lost its head. A robot that was supposed to serve wine in a restaurant ran amok instead, knocking over furniture and frightening customers, until eventually its head fell off into a customer's lap, the court of Sessions in Edinburgh was told yesterday. The court was told that during its eventful career in a restaurant in Leith, Edinburgh, the robot spilled a glass of wine on its first test run and became uncontrollable after thirty minutes, knocking over furniture. It was said to have been erratic and uncontrollable again during tests the next day, when it spilled more glasses of wine and ended dropping its head into a customer's lap, while its lights and voice cassette also failed. The engineer who demonstrated the robot at the restaurant and showed a disc jockey how to use it, told the court: "It just needed practice, and in time you can perfect it. It is almost like a conjuring trip. You speak into the microphone." But he said that if the batteries were undercharged "the results would be catastrophic, because the radio-controlled signal would be too weak and there would be jerky movements." The robot stood in court wearing a black hat and bow tie. It looked in a sorry state, incapable of speech or movement. After the case was settled, it was taken from the court on a trolley, its internal wiring detached from its body.
