Afghanistan 2010

Facts and Issues from the following website: http://www.undp.org/content/dam/undp/library/MDG/english/ MDG%20Country%20Reports/Afghanistan/MDG-2010-ReportFinal-Draft-25Nov2010.pdf Facts and Issues I found to be most relevant and important, as well as shocking I have listed below: Poverty in Afghanistan affects 36% of the population. o Possible Solution: Improve things below, which could decrease the poverty. Literacy and Education: Over the last nine years, the sector has experienced a number of achievements unprecedented in the history of the country, particularly in terms of enrolment rates. o Possible Solution: Keep increase the education provided to everyone Gender equality has been on top of government agenda, and it is considered a major crosscutting issue for its MDG-based national development strategy Possible Solution: Keep gender equality on top of the agenda. the Human Development
Index for Afghanistan was 0.398, placing the country at 172 out of 187 countries

o > Child Mortality: An improvement in reduction of infant mortality and under 5 mortality rates has been recorded. 1 49.2 deaths per 1,000 children under age five o Possible Solution: there have been improvements seen, it would be important to keep those going. In terms of the environment related target, deforestation is severe in Afghanistan. o Possible Solution: Cutting down less trees. A slight decrease in carbon dioxide emission per capita is recorded but the baseline value had been set so low originally that the decrease hardly generates any positive impact o Possible Solution: Continue decreasing the carbon dioxide emissions

There are clear links connecting womens education, maternal health, child health/mortality, general familys health, in terms of sanitation, hygiene, nutrition, reduction of exposure to diseases and familys income. Lack of education and health facilities also has linkages with higher poverty rates. Based on what I have read, Afghanistan has a lot of issues going on simultaneously and it is hard to fix everything at once. However it is also hard to go one step at a time when everything is linked together and they all lead to one another. I believe this could take years, decades to see some improvement.
