1. Start by looking at the History American Masters: Whitman and Dickinson a. Complete readers notebook questions 2. Read about free verse, inferences, and a background to the poem 3. Read #10,33, and 52 from Whitmans Song of Myself a. Use the adapted reader, complete readers notebook questions b. Look at the vocabulary from each poem c. Pick 3 words from each section and use them in a sentence. Underline the word. 4. Complete FREE VERSE activity for Song of Myself 5. Next, tell students they will be writing their own versions of Whitmans poem. Focusing on how music and lyrics can reflect personal experiences. a. Pass out Songs of Myself worksheet b. Go over the first question and requirements. c. Allow students time to work on filling in the worksheet. i. with good behavior, let students look on the computers for their songs/lyrics. ii. Poor behavior = students will not be allowed to use computers. 6. Making your own BOOK.. a. Use BOOKIFY to create online versions of their books.

Look at the different options, buttons for adding pictures/text. e. SHOW students how to change the layout f. Each page needs: genre, song artist and title, lyrics, connection and a picture g. Students can find pictures off the internet, but they must be school appropriate. h. Keep track of where you find the pictures.
