The Periodic Table on the Internet

www.chem4kids.com
Welcome to Chem4kids! You will search this site to answer questions about the periodic table. 1) What is an Element? An element is the building block of matter. Its Simple Substance. Made entirely from one type of atom. Cannot be divided into anything smaller. 2) On the periodic table, What are the rows called? What do they all have in common? Periods-All the elements in the same period. Have the same number of Atomic orbits/shells.

3) What is a shell? Orbitals-Can hold different amounts of Electrons.

4) What are the columns called? What do they all have in common? Groups-Similar configurations.

Each column has the same number of Electrons in outer shell (Valence Electrons).

5) What is an atom? Atoms make up everything. Basic unit of an element. Cannot be seen. Made of Protons, Electrons, and neutrons.

6) What is a nucleus? Middle of the Atom/Centre Protons and neutrons in the nucleus Positively charged (because of the protons) 7) Define Atomic Number : Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom ( also number electrons). 8) Define Atomic Mass: Number of protons, electrons and neutrons in an atom. Mass of Atom.

9) Choose any 6 elements and find the following information (referring only to the periodic table):

Atomic number:5 Atomic mass10.811 # protons:5 # electrons:5 # neutrons:0.811 Symbol:Zn

Atomic number:10 Atomic mass:20.1797 # protons:10 # electrons:10 # neutrons0.1797

Atomic number:14 Atomic mass:28.0855 # protons:14 # electrons:14 # neutrons:0.0855

Atomic number:30 Atomic mass:65.39 # protons:30 # electrons:30 # neutrons:5.39
