About AEL

Introduction
Introduction - AEL's product range and beyond
AEL Mining Services is proud to publish our product catalogue showcasing our product offering. This is in line with positioning the group as an added value service provider. At AEL, we always aim to go beyond the product offering to bring you a comprehensive range of services to produce optimum mining productivity. Enhanced customer focus drives us to bring you cutting edge technology and innovations from our R&D team, which play a crucial role in the development of all our products. Hence you will notice the adjustment of product categories and names. This is in line with our strategy to adopt the AEL name as our master brand, with a product or service descriptor designating a category, and likewise, a descriptor designating a specific product or service. So you will find that some of the brand names that you are accustomed to are rebranded with AEL's name, product or service descriptor and an alpha-numeric code as the specific product. The rebranding of our products has rationalised our product range to ensure that only the best and latest offerings are included. New names are given prominence and old names will appear in smalls after the new names in this edition. Alongside the formulation of our products, the new AEL Product Catalogue has been put together with meticulous care, and we hope that it is an invaluable reference tool for you. With safety at the forefront of our product design focus, on behalf of the AEL management team, I would like to wish you a safe and productive mining environment. Tobie Louw Managing Director

AEL Mining Services Limited

Explosives

Wealth Unearthed
AEL provides a range of explosives in both underground and surface mining. AEL is one of the few key manufacturers of a range of specially formulated products that can be effectively placed in vertical up-holes and downholes.
AEL's Surface Bulk Explosives are one of the best researched and developed formulations currently in the market. The Eco range of products have been developed to optimise surface mining blasting, this coupled with the use of recycled oil in the formulation has provided an environmentally friendly range of products that attain higher shock energy, hence providing a unique offering. With a solution to suit almost every application environment including surface, underground operations and quarries AEL's highly skilled team, its vast range of products and solutions, equipment and technical resources have made the company an acknowledged leader in this field, both in South Africa, African regions and internationally. One of the company's ongoing success stories is its Underground Bulk Systems, which, while widely accepted as the industry standard for underground mining, is continuously evolving within the walls of AEL's Research & Development department. New and improved emulsion formulations, pumping systems and value-add services targeted to this industry are constantly being realised as AEL continues in its efforts to improve its offering. The Underground Bulk System technology and AEL's initiating systems combine to optimise safety while improving blasting efficiencies in a variety of mining, tunnelling and shaft sinking applications. Even under the most trying blasting conditions, AEL's proven technologies deliver tangible benefits to its customers across the entire mining operation. Most notably, through the application of innovative technology combined with years of experience in this market, AEL has introduced its sticky solution, which offers customers a competitive edge in cost effective blasting and is set to change the blasting landscape as we know it today. Offering customers the ability to place explosives vertically up-hole has changed the way customers view difficult blasting environments and simplified the process substantially. Through its strategically placed network of regional depots, AEL is able to provide a full range of explosives and services to the most remote customers in African and international markets. This includes a wide range of specifically formulated water gels, emulsions, dry gels and ANFEX solutions. As with all AEL products, these solutions are supported by a reliable range of initiation systems and blasting services, as well as skilled technical support staff who are on hand to manage customer needs.

Surface Bulk Emulsions - SB300 Eco Series (Mixed with Anfo)

SB300 Eco is an AN and Urea formulation base emulsion matrix. It is recommended for use in reactive ground mostly in coal mining. It is handled and transported as an unsensitized product to mines and/or operational sites. The product is charged into blast holes when sensitised (S300 Eco) or blended with Anfo as outlined in the table below. It is used in surface mining blasting. Its' water resistance is variable depending on emulsion/Anfo ratio. Once blended and/or sensitised, the S300 Eco product range has a Velocity of Detonation (VOD) ranges from 4,500m/s to 6,000m/s

Underground Bulk Emulsions - UG100 Range

Underground bulk emulsion explosives consist of a base emulsion and sensitiser, which are classified as non-detonable and non-explosive, respectively. UG100 is used in development and stoping whereas UG100S is used primarily in up-hole/ring blasting but can also be used in development. The suffix 'S' in UG100S infers the product is 'sticky', which means it can effectively stick to the lining of blast holes, making it suitable for up-holes. The suffix 'C' in UG100 C infers the product is customised as per specific site/customer requirement/s. These products are characterised as high strength denoted by the 100 in the name. AEL manufactures all the necessary mobile charging equipment for these products.

Packaged Explosives - Magnum Watergel explosives

The Magnum range of watergel explosives have become an industry standard and are known for their reliability, high energy and excellent blasting results. The product range consists of the classic watergel configurations as well as the dry gel configurations with a high loading of ammonium nitrate prill. The dry gel explosives are characterized by a stiffer rheology for improved handling in long cartridges. Both types are offered in different energy grades to suit the blasting application.

Recommendations for use

All cartridges are packaged in printed, sausage shaped cartridges. The explosives appear silver/grey in colour. The drygel range contains visible ammonium nitrate prills. Use with AEL 8D strength detonators and always embed the detonator base charge firmly into the explosive. When using detonating cord a core load of 8g/m is recommended with a knot in intimate contact with the cartridge.

Product Range
AEL offers cartridges from 25mm to 110mm in diameter and stock the following diameters and lengths as standard:

INITIATING SYSTEMS

Electronic Delay Detonators QuickShot Plus

QuickShot Plus is a pre-programmed electronic initiation system for underground mines, which allows customers the benefits seen when using accurate timing in tunnelling applications. QuickShot Plus is a plug-and-play system where user interaction can be kept to a minimum. QuickShot Plus offers simplified daisy chain linking, which enables easy visualisation of the blast. In its simplest form customers simply connect QuickShot Plus detonators in the order in which they want the round to fire. This makes the system easy to use and easy to understand. QuickShot Plus can be used as a stand alone system or as part of a centralised blasting network.

A Blast Current Indicator (BCI) is a standard Vulcan type 0 fusehead encased in a waterproof plastic body and connected to two short lead wires for easy connection to a blasting circuit. The BCI's are used to verify continuity and sufficient firing current transfer through the actual blasting circuit before a blast is to be fired. If use correctly, the possibility of a misfire through the circuit is significantly reduced.

Initiating Accessories - Pentolite Primers

Primers are plastic cylinders filled with a very energetic explosive, comprising of a mixture of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) and trinitrotoluene (TNT) also known as pentolite. The primers incorporate circular detonator channels that run through the mould for easy insertion of a detonator or detonating cord. The channel intended for the detonator is stepped to prevent the detonator from protruding from the primer, thus ensuring proper location inside the primer.
