March 1, 2013 Dear Colleagues, I'm delighted to have the opportunity to write in support of Ms. Lewis application for a faculty position in the English department at Salt Lake Community College. I have had the privilege of observing Ms. Lewis work for the past two years, and I've found her to be an extraordinary teacher, a creative thinker, and a skillful collaborator. The students, the English Department ,and Salt Lake Community College would be extraordinarily fortunate to have a faculty member of this caliber. My work with Ms. Lewis has taken place under the auspices of LaGuardia's Making Connections National Resource Center, which I head. Since 2011, Salt Lake CC has taken part in Connect to Learning (C2L), a FIPSE-funded program led by the Making Connections Center, which brings together twenty-five colleges and universities through a national ePortfolio community of practice. Ms. Lewis and her colleagues on the Salt Lake C2L team have been exemplary members of our program, sharing their practices, their questions, and their insights. The C2L network includes many of the leading ePortfolio practitioners in higher education today, such as San Francisco State and Boston Universities; in this company, Ms. Lewis has consistently impressed me with her perceptive contributions. Drawing on her disciplinary expertise, she has made particularly important contributions in the area of reflective pedagogy, her advocacy of multimedia compositions for assignments and reflections, her knowledge of the purpose and value of assessment, and her ability to speak to ePortfolios as a writer space as well as a virtual and material rhetorical space. For example, during an online exchange focused on ePortfolios and social pedagogy led by Georgetowns Randy Bass, Ms. Lewis shared examples of collaborative, multimedia activities she uses to engage students in her SLCC English classes; these activities became touchstones for other campuses in the C2L network. In addition to our C2L engagement, I've had multiple opportunities to observe Ms. Lewis at conferences, making scholarly presentations. In this context, I've been struck with Ms. Lewis skills as an educator and the depth of her understanding and experience working with community college students. I've come away deeply impressed by her commitment and her capacity to help students take their work and their learning to a higher level.

Given all that I've observed, I know that Ms. Lewis is a valuable resource to her students and colleagues at Salt Lake Community College, as well as to the broader field. I am pleased to recommend her without reservation. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or need further information.
