Typical EMS Interview Questions 1. Did you receive any EMS training? 2a.

What topics or items were discussed / covered during the training? If they don't remember specifics from the training, I ask; 2b. What wastes are generated by the operation? 3. What happens to collected / segregated items like scrap steel, cardboard, paper, plastic? I am trying to get them to say the magic word - recycling 4. What wastes / materials are recycled at this facility? 5. What are the two reasons it is important for a company to recycle? One is a business reason (financial both disposal cost avoidance and possible revenue ) and the other is not really a business reason (it's good for the environment, the right thing to do) 6. What do you do in the case of a fire emergency? (where do you exit - nearest safe exit, where do you go assembly point, what happens when everyone gets there - headcount) 7. What do you do in the case of other emergencies? (like spills, inclement weather, etc. - questions depend upon the area and possible emergencies relevant to the facility) 8. Has the organization communicated their current objectives/targets/programs? If yes - What programs / initiatives is the company currently working on? 9. Where can you obtain additional information or statistics on your organization's EMS? If the interviewee does well on most of the above questions, I will ask; 10. What are the three key concepts / ideas in their EMS policy? (Regulatory Compliance, Continuous Improvement and Pollution Prevention). I usually help them a bit by telling them that one of the EMS policy concepts is the same as a QMS concept (CI) I will also ask questions dealing with specific operational controls / work instructions for staff that handle wastes, operate pollution control equipment or maintain key EMS equipment.
