The ALMOND tree

It was sometime in Thrace, a beautiful princess, Phyllis. She loved the son of
Theseus, Demophon. The two young people met at the boat when the young
Athenian Demophon returned from Troy. They married but after a
while the young Athenian missed his hometown.
The princess who loved him not endured seeing him sad and she let
him go back. If he came back he would prove his love for her and
then he would be only hers. So it happened. The enamorated
Phyllis was left alone to wait for many years until she languished
and died of her sorrow.
But the gods knew the story and they turned her into a tree so as
to be able to wait longer and longer for her beloved. So the woman
did not die but transformed into the tree that
became the symbol of hope: the almond.
After years Demophon , when he returned to
Thrace, found his beloved and faithful wife, not
surrounded by suitors but a barren tree without
leaves in the middle of the frozen landscape.
Desperate and remorseful hugged the trunk of tree and then she showered of flowers
in the middle of winter, so defeating death.
