I agree. As a principal, you need be certain that your staff members take these mandatory training sessions seriously and "remember" what their responsibilities are, especially in the area of mandatory reporter. Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). My specific role in this experience was middle school teacher in a public school. The State of Iowa Department of Education requires all teachers to do a few renewal training's annually like: Mandatory Reporter, Hazardous Materials, and Sexual Harassment Awareness. I complete these requirements every year in the beginning of the school year before the students come back. At Carver, the principal gathered everyone together to watch a video over sexual harassment and then have small discussions about the seriousness of the issue and keeping a safe work environment. The other training's were done by each teacher online and a certificate was printed off once completed. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). I learned that these "top-down" state requirements can be very meaningful and useful if the principal makes them. Principal Brad Schweppe always had good videos to go along with a guided discussion over the topics. I have been in buildings where it was simple a check list of things teachers had to complete with no meaningful discussion. I liked the way my mentor principal covered these and made it worthwhile for everyone in the building. As a future principal I will make sure when I am required to cover something handed down by the state or district I will do my professional duty to abide by it as well as make it meaningful to the staff.
