Relative Location Lesson Plan Teacher Candidate: Riley Winningham Grade: 3rd Subject/EEDA/SSCA: Science Date/Time of Lesson: 3/25/13

Learning Objective (Goals): Students will be able to identify the position of objects relative to a reference point. Antecedent: When given an item Behavior: students will be able to identify Concepts: the position of the object using a reference point Degree: with 90% accuracy. Alignment with Standards: 3-5.1 Identify the position of an object relative to a reference point by using position terms such as above, below, inside of, underneath, or on top of and a distance scale or measurement. Developmental Appropriateness (Science ideas): This concept is one that the students have had prior experience with in 1st grade (1-5.1), students identified the location of an object relative to another object. This will be the first time that the students have worked with the concepts of identifying positions and motions of objects with terms and measurements. Students will further develop this concept of position in 5th grade (5-5.2) when they will summarize the motion of an object in terms of position, direction, and speed. Assessment(s) of the Objectives (Evaluate): The students will be evaluated on their responses during class discussion and participation in groups by a check off list. The students beginning drawings will be collected and their science journals will also be collected at the end of the lesson to evaluate their illustrations of relative location using a reference point. Accommodations: Students with vision problems will be allowed to come to the carpet during instruction time for easier viewing of the board. Students who are easily distracted and are not on task will be accommodated for by my walking around the class to ensure that they are on task. Materials: Science notebooks, pencils, relative location PowerPoint Procedures: 1. Hook: 2. I will start the relative position PowerPoint by quickly reviewing what the students were learning the day before to help them transition and to start thinking about science. 3. I will first ask the students if they can give me a definition of the word location. I will give the students about 30 seconds to come up with an answer and will then draw two or three sticks and ask these students to share their definition.

4. I will then share with them the text book definition and will have them to write this definition in their notebooks. 5. We will then move on to reference point I will ask if anyone has any guesses about what this word is or what it might mean. I will ask for one or two volunteers to answer this question. 6. I will then explain that a reference point is something you use to determine the position of an object. I will give the students a change to copy this into their notebooks before I explain that the reference point has to be something that is NOT moving. 7. I will then ask the students to write down three examples of a reference point in their science notebooks. I will walk around and make sure that the students are on the right track. 8. I will draw three sticks and ask those students to share one of their reference points and how they knew it was a reference point. I will then write this on the PowerPoint. 9. We will then start discussing the position words. 10. I will start with above and ask if anyone can explain this term in their own words. I will draw a stick and ask that student to share their ideas. 11. I will then ask the students to explain what the reference point is in the picture and what is above in the picture. 12. As a class we will then come up with another above example from the classroom. I will ask them to draw this image in their notebooks. 13. We will then move on to the next position word below. I will ask if anyone can explain this word to me. I will draw a stick and ask that student to share their ideas. 14. I will then ask the students to explain what the reference point is in the picture and what is below in the picture. 15. As a class we will then come up with another below example from the classroom. I will ask them to draw this image in their notebooks. 16. We will then move on to the next position word inside. I will ask if anyone can explain this word to me. I will give the students wait time before drawing a stick and asking that student to share their ideas. 17. I will then ask the students to explain what the reference point is in the picture and what is inside in the picture. 18. As a class we will then come up with another inside example from the classroom. I will ask them to draw this image in their notebooks. 19. We will then move on to the next position word underneath. I will ask if anyone can explain this word to me. I will draw a stick and ask the students to share their ideas. 20. I will then ask the students to explain what the reference point is in the picture and what is underneath in the picture. 21. I will then move on to the next position word on top. I will ask if anyone can explain this word to me. I will draw a stick and ask the students to share their ideas.

22. I will then ask the students to explain what the reference point is in the picture and what is on top in the picture. 23. As a class we will then come up with another on top example from the classroom. I will ask them to draw this image in their notebooks. 24. I will then pass out the worksheet on reference point and position words. I will ask the students to take a few minutes to complete the worksheet and to turn it in when they finish. 25. Early finishers will be asked to read while they wait on their peers.
