NURSERY ESTABLISHMENT

NURSERY - is a place where

young plants are raised and
taken cared of with special
attention and protection.
TYPES OF NURSERIES

1. Permanent or central nursery

- for a large scale reforestation/
planting program requiring
longer period, usually five years
or more.
TYPES OF NURSERIES

2. Temporary or subsidiary nursery

-the area is small where only a
limited number of seedlings are
raised for a small scale
planting program requiring
short duration, usually for one
or two planting seasons only.
MAJOR STEPS IN NURSERY
ESTABLISHMENT
1. Site selection
-has a major effect on the overall
success of nursery establish-
ment and operation.
Criteria for site selection

A. Water supply
Available throughout the year
Depend on size of nursery, type of
soil,method of irrigation, and plant
species to be raised
• Water quality
Criteria for site selection

B. Soil
Sandy loam and/or loamy
soils preferably with high
humus content and pH
between 5.5 and 6.5
Criteria for site selection
C. Topography
• Should nearly be level for easier
nursery operations
• For light sandy soils, the surface
must be completely level
• A gentle slope of 1-2% is allowed for
average soil condition like sandy
loam or loam, since it permits
sufficient drainage
Criteria for site selection

D. Size
May vary but large enough to
supply the planting requirements
or needs
Nursery Lay-out
MAJOR STEPS IN NURSERY
ESTABLISHMENT
2. Site preparation
Involves clearing or removal
of undesirable vegetation and
other physical surface cover
such as stone rocks
A bulldozer maybe used to
facilitate clearing operations
MAJOR STEPS IN NURSERY
ESTABLISHMENT

nursery infrastructure/facilities
• Usually, 40% of total nursery area is
