West High Womens Track & Field Handbook 2013

West High Track & Field Rules and Regulations Practice 1 Practice begins at 3:15 in the player meeting room. By this time, you should have already seen the trainer (if necessary) and changed into the proper training gear. NO PHONES OR MUSIC ALOUD. The coaches will not hold on to them for you and you cannot run properly with a phone in your pocket, you need to leave them in your locker. There will be a short team meeting followed by a team warm-up.

2 Be prepared to run outside everyday regardless of the weather conditions. This means having a hat, gloves, sweatshirt, sweatpants, tights. 3 The warm-up and cool-down are done everyday. This is apart of practice and as important as the actual workout. 4 Do not miss workouts. Academics are not an excuse to miss or show up late to practice. If necessary, teachers can be available before school to provide assistance. If there is a problem with this, then talk to a coach first and we will help you solve the problem. Missing or being late to practice is a last resort. Budget your time. If you reach a point in the season where you feel like it is too much then talk to the coaching staff and we can figure something out. Please understand that academics are always more important than athletics, but athletics are not an excuse for your grades slipping. 5 If you miss practice you will be expected to tell us the reason why. If it is something planned then we will need to know in advance. Dont tell us the day before and dont have another athlete tell us. Athletes should give us at least one week notice if they have something planned. Please, dont schedule dentist/doctor/college visits/ etc. during scheduled practice times. We understand that this is sometimes unavoidable; our suggestion is to schedule appointments on Wednesday after school and before practice. If you stay home from school, do not come to practice. If you are not able to attend practice because you stayed home sick or left school sick, make every attempt to communicate this with us at some point during the day. If you miss then we will talk to you after the team meeting the following day and determine whether it is excused or unexcused. A third unexcused absence will result in removal from the team. This doesnt mean that we are mad at you or dont like you, it just means that you arent ready for the commitment yet and you can try again next year. 6 We expect good attitudes. If we hear negative talk or see negative attitudes then we will address it, if it continues then we will have to go our separate ways. 7 We understand that athletes come out for track for different reasons, but everyone is expected to work hard and try to be the best that they can be. Lack of effort will result in dismissal from the team. Satisfaction comes in trying to do your best in every meet and every workout. Dont cheat yourself and the team by giving a poor effort. Meets The meets are the time to test yourself and to show people what you can do. You prepare all week to compete and perform your best at the meet. Lack of focus at a meet will result in a poor performance and disappointment. The warm-up and cool-down are extremely important and should be completed with teammates at each meet. It makes no sense to compete at practice and

not compete at the meet. If we think you arent giving 100% during a meet then we wont take you to meets anymore, and if we cant take you to meets then there is no point of being on the team. You are expected to compete at your highest level at all times. There will be zero tolerance for misbehavior at meets. Your behavior (whether good or bad) reflects back on the program. If you cant handle yourself with class, we will not continue to be apart of the team . The coaching staff will not tolerate any behavior that embarrasses the program. This includes practice, meets, and traveling. We expect you to support your teammates. This not only means encouragement during a meet situation, but respect for quiet time before competition. Avoid negative people, talk, behavior, and thoughts. Be a positive role model. Equipment 1 You are responsible for all practice and meet gear that is checked out to you. If you lose it or it is stolen, you will be charged. Jacket-$100, Pants-$100, Singlet-$30, Shorts-$30 2 Your meet gear will be checked out to you before the first meet (seniors first etc.). Again, it will be your responsibility. Dont leave anything lying around unattended!!! Have someone watch your gear while you are competing. 3 Lock things up! Every year someone has had a cell phone stolen, lock your stuff up or it will get stolen. Remember you only bring what you need for practice to practice everything else needs to be put away.

Injuries YOU DO NOT HAVE AN INJURY UNLESS YOU HAVE SEEN THE TRAINER!!! Injuries are a part of athletics and too often we have athletes with prolonged injuries because they are not taking care of themselves properly. Here is the routine that is expected to be followed: 1 If you have an injury then report it to a coach first then (if necessary) we will send you to the trainer. Do not see the trainer without seeing a coach first. 2 After you see the trainer you always come back and report to your coach what the trainer said. 3 You will then continue to see the trainer every day until the injury is gone. This needs to be done BEFORE the meeting. If at any point you stop seeing the trainer, whether the injury is gone or not, we will assume that the injury is gone.

4 You need to talk to your coach everyday about your recovery and still attend the team meetings. 5 You are responsible for your recovery. If you really want to be a part of the team then you will do everything possible to get yourself back as soon as possible. If we hold you back in any way because of an injury then you should not be participating in any activities outside of practice that are detrimental to your recovery. Confusion comes when someone says they are injured and they arent taking any steps toward getting better. We will always question the severity of the injury if the individual doesnt take any steps toward recovery.
