Systems of Equations

8th Grade Mathematics

Standards/Targets CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.8a Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously. CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.8b Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection. For example, 3x + 2y = 5 and 3x + 2y = 6 have no solution because 3x + 2y cannot simultaneously be 5 and 6. CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.8c Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables. For example, given coordinates for two pairs of points, determine whether the line through the first pair of points intersects the line through the second pair. Blooms Taxonomy Levels for each Standard/Target TARGET GOAL #1 1. Knowledge Students will be able to identify the solution to a system of equations by identifying the point at which they intersect. 2. Comprehension Students will be able to explain why the solution to a system of equations is the point of intersection. 3. Application Students will be able to graph a system of equations and label the solution. 4. Analysis Students will be able to identify whether a system of equations has one solution, no solutions, or infinitely many solutions by looking at the graphs. 5. Synthesis Students will be able to create their own systems of equations with one solution, no solutions, and infinitely many solutions using graphs. 6. Evaluation

TARGET GOAL #2 1. Knowledge Students will be able to identify whether a system of equations has one solution, no solutions, or infinitely many solutions by looking at the graphs. Students can list the steps to solving a system of equations algebraically. 2. Application Students can solve a system of equations using the elimination and substitution methods. 4. Analysis Students can identify which method to use when solving for a solution to a system of equations algebraically. Students will be able to identify whether a system of equations has one solution, no solutions, or infinitely many solutions by looking at the equations. 5. Synthesis Students can create their own examples of systems of equations with one solution, no solution, and infinitely many solutions using equations. 6. Evaluation Students can debate which algebraic method for solving a system of equations is better or easier than the other.
