Antonia Lewis-Goseer DESCRIPTION OF SITE AND LEARNER The school system where I am employed is located in an urban community in southwest

Georgia with a population of 94,788 (2010 estimate). The school system is the home to 26 schools, sixteen primary (Pre-Kindergarten 5th grade), seven middle (6th 8th grade) and four high schools (9th 12th grade) that collectively enroll 15,946 students in Pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The student population is 87% African American, 10% White, 1% Hispanic, and 1% multi-racial. The school system employs approximately 2,508 employees, including 1,207 certified teachers and administrators. The school where I work is a Title I school of Technology, Math and Engineering. The goal of the school is to maximize academic achievement of all students while providing experiences that will prepare them for postsecondary institutions and the workforce. The school demographics show a student population of 1,100 students of which 97% are African-American and 3% other. Eighty-nine percent of our student population is economically disadvantaged and ten percent of the students are enrolled in our exceptional students program. The media center is the hub of the school and it houses a total collection of 43,612 books. In addition to the vast collection the school has sixty-three model classrooms equipped with Promethean Boards, Elmo document readers, data projectors, port replicators for the teacher laptops, Classroom Performance System (CPS), six computer workstations in each classroom and a Sherwood station which include televisions, radios, DVD Players and VHS players.

There are Four Hundred Twenty-Seven students in the Ninth Grade Academy of which 56 are repeaters. The Ninth Grade Academy consists of four teachers; one is a special education teacher. The academy teachers have collaborative planning and are required to meet at least once a week. They serve approximately twenty students per class period, four of the twenty are special education students and they are served in one class with the special education teacher serving as Co-Teacher. The ethnicity of these students is African American. The reading levels of students in American Government range from having basic reading skills to students reading on grade level. The special education students have a Specific Learning Disability and are being served for reading comprehension. The 9th grade repeaters function on a low level and most of them repeated a grade in elementary school. CURRICULUM REVIEW For this activity I will focus on how rules and laws are created in American Government, the differences between the House and the Senate, the difference between national and state legislature and how lobbyist and interest groups are involved in the legislative process. COLLECTION REVIEW The inspection of the media center showed that most of the collection is old. The media center is well organized; the non-fiction books are on the back wall which makes an L shape. The bookcases are approximately five feet to five and a half feet in height. The shelves are labeled and the books are labeled as well with the Dewey decimal on the front of the bookcases and on each aisle. There are six, four feet tall bookcases, four hold reference material and two fiction material. There are also four five and a half feet high and approximately twenty feet long bookcases that shelves fiction, biographies and literary books. The media center also has a shelf with various atlases, newspaper racks, magazine racks and a display bookcase. The Audio/Visual room had a limited supply of DVDs and a large number of VHS recordings. My next step was to search for books and material related to the curriculum. My search indicated there was a tremendous amount of material related to the curriculum in the non-fiction section, but the books were old and worn, the copyright date on most of the material was before the year 2000 some had copyright dated back to 1834. I also used Destiny and search for material related to the curriculum by Subject, Series, and

Keywords. The Key Word search was done with key works from the standard. The results indicated the following:

The total titles in the media center collection are 43,612 of which, 73 titles are related to the American Government curriculum. The collection had titles published before year 2000 and copyright dates more than ten years old, some dated back to 1929. The search also indicated of the 73 titles 57 are non-fiction and 16 are fiction. I also check to see the top fifty searches by titles, keyword, subject, title and series and the result indicated there were not searches made form January 1, 2000 to September 28, 2012. Of the total titles none was checked out this year and one was checked out last year and it was not related to the American Government curriculum. My inspection also determined that of the 73 titles only twenty-one are actually related to the curriculum. The final step of my review was to inspect to see if there were items in the collection for Special Education students. The results indicate there are no audio books in the collection. SUMMARY OF COLLECTION NEEDS: Collection of resources published within the past ten years. Updated title to entice the patrons to check out books as well as display current titles in the collection as they come into the media center. BUDGET SUMMARY Several vendors were used to research my collection. I found a vast collection of resources that will enhance the collection. I will need $3,988.42 to complete the collection process of this order: $2,453.54 for books, $1,058.63 for DVDs and $476.25 for E-books. There were several titles that represented the Three Branches of Government, the Senate, and the House of Representatives and most of the titles were non-fiction, I had difficulty finding a large selection of audio books. In my search I also stumbled on a few fantastic websites that could be used when teaching these standards to students with deficits in reading and low level special education students: (www.myaudioschool.com), http://www.teachervision.fen.com and http://free.ed.gov/. I have added there sites to my Wiki Space. I was able to locate various titles in different formats such as books/e-books, video, audio and reference book. Please refer to the following documents for specific information concerning my collection.
