The John Marshall Law School

Robert Heist

A principal at R. Connor & Associates, a boutique law firm in Chicago, Robert Heist earned his JD from the John Marshall Law School. Established in 1899, the John Marshall Law School bears the name of the third Chief Justice of the U.S., one of the most influential of the nations early jurists. It is located in the Loop, Chicagos central financial and legal district. Its proximity to the federal courts in the Dirksen Federal Building, across the street, and the Cook County Courts in the Daley Center, about four blocks distant, gives students significant educational, networking, and career opportunities. Unlike most other American law schools, the John Marshall Law School is independent that is, it is not affiliated with a university. The school offers the juris doctor (JD) as a full-time (three years) or part-time (four years plus two summer sessions) program, as well as several master of law (LLM) degrees in such areas as employee benefits, tax law, and intellectual property law. Foreign students may earn an LLM in U.S. Legal Studies. Students can also elect to earn a joint JD/LLM degree, and several master of science (MS) degrees are also available. Students at the John Marshall Law School can choose from a broad range of options to meet the increasingly complex demands on their time. For example, programs are available for fulltime and part-time students alike, as is daytime and evening instruction, features that are increasingly rare in American legal education. January enrollment is another option for new students. A more comprehensive examination of the school and its offerings is available on its website at www.jmls.edu.
