Sketchbook Assignments: Packet 1


Directions: Choose any 6 assignments out of the options given in this packet. Each assignment should take about 45 minutes to complete (total of 6 days). Each assignment should be completed in your sketchbook and numbered or named, so your teacher knows which assignment it is. If you do not have your sketchbook in class, you must complete the assignment on newsprint paper and staple it into your sketchbook later. All assignments must be in your sketchbook and ready to turn in no later than Wednesday, 14 January. Your grading for each assignment is based on your creativity and the effort you put in to fulfill the assignment. You only have 45 minutes (plus one make-up day) to complete each assignment, so they may not be perfectbut if there is time, you should always try to give them as finished a look as possible (contrast, shading, textures, details, etc.). Extra Credit option: If you are completed with all 6 assignments by the end of class on Monday, 12 January, you can choose to do a 7th assignment on Tuesday, 13 January during makeup time.

Assignment #1: Limitation.

Materials:

Sketchbook Pencils

Assignment: Draw in a single picture the following objects: one church, one house, one fence, two trees, four flowers, one animal, and one mode of transportation (car, bus, etc.). Draw no more, no less. Arrange the objects however you would like. Evaluation/Grading: Based on effort (attention to detail), perspective, and creativity (unusual use and arrangement of the objects, or the angle from which they are viewed).

Assignment #2: Situation.


Materials: Sketchbook Pencils Assignment: Draw in a single picture an illustration of the following sentence: While watching television one night, I heard a strange noise. Evaluation: Based on effort (attention to detail) and creativity (angle from which the television is viewed, unusual manner in which night is portrayed and the noise expressed).

Assignment #3: Aging.


Materials: Sketchbook Pencils

Assignment: Draw in a single picture four heads or figures (people), each representing a different stage of growth (for example, young childhood, teenager, middle age, old age). Suggest a story connection between the four characters. Add a background that indicates where these characters are. Evaluation: Effort (attention to detail) and attention shown to the relationships between the characters.

Assignment #4: Bus Ride.

Materials:

Assignment: Draw a bus ride in a single picture. You can make whatever choices you want as to what this means. Evaluation: Effort (attention to detail), attention shown to the assignment, creativity.

Assignment #5: Four Seasons.


Materials: Sketchbook Pencils

Assignment: Draw in one single picture the four seasonal changes of the year (fall, winter, spring and summer). You should focus on the change of each season, not just draw four pictures that show four seasonsit must be one continuous picture. (Hint: Since you cant use color, focus on how objects themselves change as the seasons do.) You can choose any objects you would like to show the seasonal changes. Evaluation: Effort (attention to detail), attention to assignment, creativity (choice of objects, methods of showing changes, etc.).

Assignment #6: City of Tomorrow.


Materials: Sketchbook Pencils

Assignment: Draw in a single picture a view of a city of tomorrow. Consider methods of transportation, living quarters, type of landscape, etc. Evaluation: Effort (attention to detail), attention to the central idea, creativity, perspective.

Assignment #7: Happy Event.


Materials: Sketchbook Pencils

Assignment: In one picture, indicate a happy event. You do not need to draw peoplein fact, creativity points may go up if you can indicate a happy event that has happened or is happening without using people.

Evaluation: Effort (attention to detail), effectiveness of emotional arrangement and expression, creativity (use and arrangement of objects).

Assignment #8: Losing the State Championship.


Materials: Sketchbook Pencils

Assignment: Draw in a single picture the effects of a team losing the state championship. Illustrate the reactions of the coach, players, students and people of the community. Evaluation: Effort (attention to detail), effectiveness of emotional arrangement and expression, creativity and originality.

Assignment #9: Winning the State Championship.


Materials: Sketchbook Pencils

Assignment: Draw in a single picture the effects of a team winning the state championship. Illustrate the reactions of the coach, players, students and people of the community. Evaluation: Effort (attention to detail), effectiveness of emotional arrangement and expression, creativity and originality.
