Grade Level: 10-12

Subject/Content: Theater Foundations III

CONTEXTUAL FACTORS (e.g. ethnicity, gender, exceptionalities, ELL, GATE, etc.) which need differentiation in instruction and assessment. This diverse class will need a level of sensitivity to gender and ethnic variations, as well as demonstrating tolerance for the artistic mind (noise level, creative exploration, etc).

WALK-AWAY (what do I want students to know, understand, and be able to do?) Content Walk-Away: Students will gain experience in creating, blocking, choreographing, designing, costuming, and advertising for a Musical Theater Review. Reading/Language Walk-Away: Each student will be responsible for their own scene including interpreting and performing the repertoire.

Activate Prior Knowledge/Experiences Show the students clips from various performances that demonstrate of musical theater. Focus Lesson (I do it) Review and disperse copies of the Schedule and the Rubric with the class. Guided Instruction (We do it) Set the theme of the Review (i.e. Heroes and Villains or shows by Steven Sondheim or Broadway from the 40s and 50s). Set other parameters of the review (how many total numbers, how everything will be graded, how to earn points, which points are mandatory.) Collaborative/Cooperative (You do it together) Have the students split into groups and decide what songs they are going to perform. Give them time to go to the library with clear instructions on when to have final decisions made. Perform the Broadway Review. Independent (You do it alone) Have the students fill out a progress report that is due on a specific date well before the performance. Summarization/Closure Have the students fill out the rubric/check-off list and turn it in for points. Discuss the successes and failures of the show and what we learned.

Perform a solo, duet or small ensemble number. (max 100 pts) Design a production poster for the show. Get poster printed Hang posters: Around DHS and locations in St. George area. Write an article for the Spectrum and submit it for publication (see Mr. Saxton for details).
