Teacher Candidate: Russ Sumens Grade Level: 10-12 Lesson Title: The History of Musical Theater Subject/Content: Theater Foundations III

CONTEXTUAL FACTORS (e.g. ethnicity, gender, exceptionalities, ELL, GATE, etc.) which need differentiation in instruction and assessment. This diverse class will need a level of sensitivity to gender and ethnic variations, as well as demonstrating tolerance for the artistic mind (noise level, creative exploration, etc).

WALK-AWAY (what do I want students to know, understand, and be able to do?) Content Walk-Away: The students will understand the basic history of musical theatre. Reading/Language Walk-Away: They will practice effective research techniques while researching specific moments/aspects of musical theater history and conduct a short presentation on what they learned.

There will be a worksheet that will be filled out as the students are presenting. The instructor will ask pertinent questions to make sure they understand the content they were supposed to research. Each group will turn in a basic citation that must pass instructor approval (no Wikipedia etc.)

Give the students the worksheet Go through the first 3 questions with them o Teach about music in Greek theater/society o Teach about Italian Opera Demonstrate for them how to give a short presentation o Compare and contrast Opera with Musical Theater

Guided Instruction (We do it) (40 minutes)


Divide the class into 5 groups Assign each group a question to answer from the worksheet. Give them time to research the answers to the questions in the library or bring research material they can use in the classroom. Have the groups present what they have learned to the entire class Make sure everyone fills out the worksheet in its entirety and turns it in for points.

Independent (You do it alone) (with guided instruction)


Before the students leave to research explain that they will need to cite their source. When they turn in their worksheet the citation should be included on the bottom.

Summarization/Closure (25 minutes)


Ask: Why is it important to understand where the origins of Musical Theater? to generate a discussion that will lead to the next lesson.
