Planning
1. Identify Topics -choose a topic that will allow students to practice organizing bodies of knowledge 2. Specify Learning Objectives -set clear expectations of what you want students to learn from the topic 3. Prepare Data Representations -prepare information that students can analyze in order to reach your learning objectives -make sure the data is displayed effectively and appropriate for the assigned topic 4. Specify Questions -anticipate and plan for questions that students may ask during the lesson
Implementing
Phase One: The Open-ended Phase -instruct students to become more acquainted with the data you are presenting in order for them to describe, compare, and find patterns within the data Phase Two: The Casual Phase -students look for possible cause-andeffect relationships in the data they examined in phase one Phase Three: The Hypothetical Phase -students hypothesize and analyze the the information Phase Four: Closure and Application -students generalize and summarize the content, and then apply their understanding to new situations
Assessing
Assessing Content Outcomes -assess students understanding of the content while also assessing the students ability to express their thoughts in writing -assessment can be done by either multiple choice or short answer Assessing Critical Thinking -assess students ability to construct their own conclusions that are best supported by evidence -assessment can be done by either multiple choice or short answer as long as students are interpreting info. to come to a conclusion
Motivation/ Modification
Motivation -through high student involvement, and cooperation among students there is an increase in motivation
Modifications -when working with young children data displays should be designed in a pictorial form -the phases need to be very structured
Students practice their critical thinking skills by drawing conclusions based on connections they find throughout organizing bodies of information.
