ASTM C-40 Tester

The 815-11 Tester is designed for quick and accurate tests of organic matter in sand and aggregates for concrete, according to ASTM C-40. Organic impurities, usually in the form of tannic acid and its derivatives, are typically present in fine aggregates such as sand. These may interfere with the chemical reactions of hydration and may affect the strength of the cement, mortar or concrete where the aggregate is being used. The results given by the Tester are designed to serve as a warning that unacceptable levels of organic impurities may be present. In the test, a measured sample of fine aggregate is shaken with sodium hydroxide solution in a stoppered bottle and left to stand for 24 hours. The liquid above the test sample develops a color, which is compared directly with colored glass standards to indicate the level of organic impurities present.

1. Fill the glass bottle with the sample of fine aggregate up to the 130 ml line. 2. Make up sodium hydroxide solution 3% as instructed. 3. Add sodium hydroxide solution until the volume of fine aggregate and liquid is approximately 200 ml. 4. Screw the cap on tightly and shake the bottle vigorously. 5. Leave to stand for 24 hours. The liquid above the sample develops a color that indicates the level of organic impurities present. 6. After this period compare the color of the liquid in the bottle with the 5 glass standard colors in the disc to obtain the closest match. 7. 8. If the color of the liquid above the sample is darker than the mid-point color standard (Organic Plate No 3) then the aggregate may possibly contain injurious organic impurities and further tests should be made before approving the aggregate for use in concrete.
