Cleopatra (Hair, Makeup, and Clothing)

Ancient Egypt is an interesting location to study, and has fascinating places to explore. People studied Egyptian history throughout 3,000 years because there were so many things to discover. I would like to learn more about Cleopatra. Since there are so many facts about Cleopatra, I narrowed it down to Cleopatras hair, makeup, and clothing. I would like to find out if anyone followed Cleopatras lead with clothing, makeup, and hair. Did Cleopatra do her hair a special way for any particular reason? Did people think she was pretty? What kind of clothing did Cleopatra wear? How did Cleopatra wear her makeup? Cleopatra is a very well known woman. She was the last queen of ancient Egypt and one of the most famous rulers of all time. Cleopatra ruled from 69 B.C.-30 B.C. She ruled in Alexandria, Egypt. Her father was Ptolemy XII, the pharaoh. Cleopatra married her 10-year-old younger brother whose name was Ptolemy XIII. Since only males were allowed to become pharaoh, Cleopatra was his queen. Their father, Ptolemy XII died and left his kingdom to Cleopatra and her younger brother. Cleopatras style embraced the figure-hugging fashions of Egypt as well as more modest, fully draped Roman style gowns based on depictions of the queen during her lifetime. - Copyright Travis Arts. Cleopatra was very well known for her fashion. She wore fully draped Roman style dresses. Cleopatra wore head accessories and jewelry. Cleopatra also wore a roman circlet on her hair. A circlet is a circular band, typically one made of precious metal, worn on the head as an ornament. Cleopatra wore Egyptian crowns and headdresses. She had many different hairstyles. One of Cleopatras hairstyles was pulled back into a bun. Her second hairstyle looked like a melon. Her third hairstyle was a headdress with a cobra. Those three lavish hairstyles helped to strengthen her fame and power. Cleopatras makeup was very beautiful. She used green paste for her lower eyelids, and used dark blue paste with gold specks for her upper eyelids. She darkened her eyebrows, and lengthened

her eyelashes. She used red clay for her lips and cheeks. Cleopatras hands were covered with different designs of henna. Henna is powdered leaves from a tropical shrub, used as a dye to decorate your body. Cleopatra used her hairstyle to enhance her power and fame. Things like statues and coins of the queen told us she wore three different hairstyles. Her first hairstyle was putting her hair into curls and pulling it out of her face into a bun. Her second hairstyle was tied back out of her face to resemble a melon. For her third hairstyle she wore a headdress, with a cobra made with precious metal. For her makeup she wore green paste for her lower eyelids. She used dark blue paste with gold specks for her upper eyelids, made from ground lapis lazuli stone. She darkened her eyebrows, and she lengthened her eyelashes with black kohl. Kohl is made of animal fat and powdered lead sulfide. She used red ochre, a type of clay colored red by iron oxide for her lipstick and cheeks. Her hands were painted with henna in different designs. Henna was also used for nail polish. Her fashion embraced the figure-hugging fashions of Egypt. She also wore fully draped Roman style dresses based on depictions of the queen during her life. Cleopatras head accessories and jewelry, are from both cultural influences, including coins showing Cleopatra with a roman circlet on her hair and a few carvings and paintings including crowns and headdresses. I first chose the topic, Cleopatra. I had to narrow that down because that was such a huge topic. I narrowed it down to Cleopatras hair, makeup, and clothing because I was always interested about her interests in those subjects. I found many sites that were very helpful to me, that contained many interesting facts. Some of the times I couldnt find facts that were true but when I searched harder, I found what I needed.
