Todorovs Narrative Theory

Courtney-Jade OReilly

Tzvetan Todorov believed that all stories follow a set structure in the process of five stages

The Idea

Equilibrium Disruption of the equilibrium Recognition of the disruption An attempt to repair the damage New equilibrium

The Five Stages

Insidious is a gripping story of a family in search of help for their son who falls into a coma after a mysterious incident in the attic. Little do they know there is much more than meets the eye, and this can be adhered to Todorovs theory.

Insidious

The Equilibrium: The family move into their new house. Everything is as normal as expected. Disruption: One of the sons, Dalton, falls into a coma after an incident in the attic of the new home. Recognition: Strange things begin to happen in the house, such as the confrontations with demons who stay beside the boys bedside. Repairing Damage: The father enters the world in which these demons have come from and saves his son. New Equilibrium: The father murders the old woman, suggesting he has now been possessed by the demons.
