Day 6 Lesson Plan: Whos Who Part 2

Title Whos Who Part 2: Chapter 10-13 Quiz and Further Categorization of the Greek Gods Overview The class will begin with quiz over chapters 10 through 13. The quiz has a few general multiple choice questions followed by short answer questions to gauge students comprehension of and connections to the text. We will then review the quizzes and, in turn, the chapters. I will present information on four more of the major gods in The Lightning Thief. Students will take notes on the attributes of each of the gods, they will again decide which god their group thinks is the most powerful, they will present that decision and we will keep a tally on the board. Their homework for the night will be further reading and a journal entry on which god they most identify with and which cabin they think they would be in at Camp Half-Blood. Goals/Objectives Students will gain clarification of those chapters through the quiz review and subsequent discussion. Students will learn about the gods/goddesses presented. Students will decide what attributes encompasses the power of their god/goddess. Materials/Resources Needed The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan Chapter 10-13 Quiz. PowerPoint presentation on Dionysus, Hermes, Ares and Aphrodite. Why Our God Rules! Group Handout Student journals. Activities/Procedures Quiz: Chapters 10-13 The students read chapters 10-13 for homework over the weekend. The quiz is composed of a few multiple choice questions and a few short answer questions that will assess key plot points in the chapters and foster deeper thinking (the reflective dimension) about the messages in these chapters. Peer Corrections: Quiz Answers and Review As a class we will correct the multiple choice questions and talk about possible answers for the short answer questions though, there are not necessarily right answers to those questions. The students will turn in the quizzes, so I can review and note their grades. I will then ask if there are any sections of those chapters that need clarification. Presentation: Major gods of The Lightning Thief Part 2 (See PowerPoint Presentation) Dionysus: Had a mortal parent, two-sided, friend of Satyrs, god of theatre.

Hermes: Mischievous & clever, Olympian messenger, winged cap & sandals. Ares: Not popular (not even liked by his mother), ruthless & cowardly, no temples, god of war. Aphrodite: Born out of sea foam, goddess of love & beauty, irresistible to men, dove & swan are symbols of her grace. Group Work: Why Our Greek God Rules! In class assignment. After instruction about the four gods/goddesses listed above, students will break into groups to decide who they think is the most powerful based on the information they have been given. Using the handout Why Our Greek God Rules!, in lit circles, students will create a drawing of the god/goddess based on the description given and that god s powers. They will then write 2-3 sentences about why they think the god they have chosen is more powerful than the other three. Presenting & Listening: Class listens as each group makes their case. These will be presented informally in class, the handouts will be returned to me, and we will keep a tally to see which god has the most fans thus far. Wrap Up: Reading Chapters 14 & 15 assigned as homework, as well as journal assignment. Journal Assignment: Please write one paragraph for each of the following questions: Which of the Olympians would you most like to be and why? If you were a half-blood, which Camp Half-Blood cabin would you be in? This will help students with their upcoming Wiki project because they will begin the process of identifying which gods they like and how that correlates into a cabin at Camp Half-Blood.

Assessment I will assess student understand of Chapters 10-13 through the quiz and subsequent peer grading, and I will mark their grades accordingly. During my presentation I will make sure students understand they are to be taking notes on the presentation and I will ask them to pay attention to the words that are in bold on the presentation, because those words are the key words to remember about each god. After handing out the group assignment I will walk throughout the room ensuring that each group is working on their assignment and that all students are involved. This will allow me to see how well groups are working together, to judge the level of interest in the assignment and to gauge students understanding of the presentation. During the group presentations I will keep a tally on the board so all students can see which god has the most votes thus far. This should help me assess the general understanding of the presentation as well and it should add a level of competition and fun to learning about Greek gods. I will assign a point value to each groups worksheet once they are turned in based on the quality of their work. Accommodation Students with dyslexia or other reading difficulties will be allowed to take the quiz with the aid of a parapro/tutor, or may have the opportunity to do this as a take-home quiz. I will be happy to meet with these students at the end of the day to administer the quiz as well. If the quiz is taken after the class period, I will have to excuse the students as we go over the results of the quiz. During the quiz & review time they can read ahead or catch up on their reading. Students with dyslexia or other reading difficulties will be given copies of the PowerPoint presentation on the Greek Gods to allow them to read along, rather than having to read and write quickly. By combing verbal and visual information I hope to aid in the ease of their understanding. They will be allowed to lean on their fellow classmates in the lit circle assignment, and can lend their ideas vocally or perhaps artistically. I will make sure these students have noted their homework in their planner/journal.
