Windows XP/Vista/7 Will Not Fully Shut Down Time to Complete (in minutes): 20 Question: Windows XP/Vista/7 will not fully shut down. It stops at the "Windows is shutting down" screen. How do I fix this? Answer: There are two possible reasons why your computer is not shutting down properly: Symantec AntiVirus is configured to scan floppy disks when your computer shuts down. If you are using Symantec Endpoint Protection: 1. Start Symantec Endpoint Protection. 2. Select the Change Settings tab. 3. To the right of Virus and Spyware Protection, click the Configure Settings link. 4. Select the Auto-Protect tab. 5. Click the Advanced button. 6. Under Additional advanced options, click the Floppies button. 7. Under Computer shutdown settings, clear the Check floppies when the computer shuts down check box. 8. Click OK. 9. In the Auto-Protect Advanced Options window, click OK. 10. In the Virus and Spyware Protection Settings window, click OK. 11. Close the Symantec Endpoint Protection window.
