Jake Nesler, Haley Stojak, Jordan Sandberg, Lesson Plan #2 Name: China, Tang and Song Achievements, Confucianism

and Song dynasty Class/Subject: 6th Grade World History Date: Tuesday, April 3rd 2012 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will grasp a better understanding of the major achievements accomplished in ancient China by the Tang and Song dynasties as well as the importance of reforming religions, in this case Confucianism, that played on these developments. Content Standards: 16.B.3b (W) Identify causes and effects of the decline of the Roman empire and other major world political events (e.g., rise of the Islamic empire, rise and decline of the Tang dynasty, establishment of the kingdom of Ghana) between 500 CE and 1500 CE. 16.C.3a (W) Describe major economic trends from 1000 to 1500 CE including long distance trade, banking, specialization of labor, commercialization, urbanization and tech-nological and scientific progress. 18.A.3 Explain how language, literature, the arts, architecture and traditions contribute to the development and transmission of culture. Materials/Resources/Technology: PowerPoint, online textbook, YouTube videos, overhead projector, Teachers Goals: Due to length of a block scheduled class period, we hope to fill this time approximately with equal amounts of lecturing through PowerPoint slides, giving ample time for students to write down notes. We also hope to provide a fair amount of time doing in-class activities that work to further engage students after the presentation. Our hopes behind this are to reinforce what they have already learned. Time: 7:50am Start of Class: Teacher will take attendance and allow for students to get settled. Graphic organizers will be explained and passed out for use on the first part of the lesson. 7:55 Introduction of Lesson: teachers will explain the lesson, summarizing the main points. Following the summary class will start with the first PowerPoint part of the lesson. Each teacher will trade off lecturing on a PowerPoint slide or in another way depending on the flow of class, and the responsiveness of students. It is important to remember to check on students as to whether they are taking in and writing down important information on their graphic organizers. Keep a steady pace to ensure this. 8:00 Lesson Instruction: The lesson will begin with section 2 of Chapter 14 in the textbook on Chinas Song and Tang dynasties. Lesson will progress as follows: 1. Broad introduction and coverage of Chinese agriculture 2. Introduction of Song and Tang Dynasties with their accomplishments, city life, art...

3. Technologic innovations, videos to go along with these 4. After Section 2 is complete, students will participate in product advertisement assessment activity Lesson will then move on to Section 3: Confucian thought influencing the Song government, students will fill out another graphic organizer for this section 1. Introduction of Confucianism 2. Virtues of Confucianism 3. Decline and revival of Confucianism 4. Civil Service Exams 5. Scholar-officials, Bureaucracy, Civil Service 6. Students will participate in another activity assessment based on this section 8:20/8:50 Assessments/Checks for Understanding: the assessments and checks for understanding come in the form of the graphic organizers and activities for each half of the lesson.

Ancient Chinese Invention Advertisement Project

After you have chosen your invention, use the back of this paper to create an advertisement. This advertisement needs to convince the ancient government officials to help fund your invention. 9:05 Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: Following the final assessment activity, teachers will review graphic organizers and answer any questions students may have regarding the entire lesson. The main points of the lesson will also be reflected upon and reinforced if need be. Students will either hand in or keep their organizers depending on the decision of the cooperating teacher. 9:08 Self-Assessment: reflect on lesson, did we work as a group well together? How was the pace of the lesson, were students able to remain primarily engaged throughout? Was the use of graphic organizers a positive technique? Did the assessments hold relevance to the day's lesson?
