Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina of the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane season was the costliest, as well as one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the USA. It was the sixth strongest hurricane in the world history. Hurricane Katrina was formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005 and crossed Southern Florida causing some deaths and flooding there, before growing rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico. Katrina also crossed the Central Florida and Texas, but the most property damage and loss of life occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana. The levee system in New Orleans catastrophically failed, as well as The Federal Flood Protection System which failed at more than fifty places. At least 1,800 people lost their lives in the hurricane, making it the deadliest hurricane in USA since The Okeechobee hurricane in 1928. The storm caused $81,2 billion of damage making it the costliest tropical cyclone in USA. Hurricane Katrina had profound impact on the environment. The storm surge caused beach erosion, completely devastating some coastal areas. As part of the clean up efforts, the flood waters in New Orleans were pumped into a lake. This process took 43 days to complete. These waters contained a mix of sewage, pesticides, toxic materials heavy metals and 24 million liters oil which caused a massive numbers of fish dying. The efforts to help those people affected by the hurricane still continue. People affected by this terrible hurricane continue to work hard to regain their health and livelihood they had before the storm.
