Science Methods Lesson #2 Topic: This lesson will center on the planting of the Brassica seeds and the familiarization of the logbooks. There will be some review of the vocabulary that was identified in the previous lesson. Prior Knowledge: Prior Knowledge will consist of the vocabulary that we had talked about in the previous lesson; Seed, roots, cones, seed coat, germinate and soil. Objectives: -Students will be able to complete the process of planting a seed, and use the terminology for seed, soil and roots. -Students will decorate and know how to use the observation logbooks Materials: Potting soil Newspaper Brassica seed Plastic spoons Biodegradable pots Nametags Greenhouse Grow light Vocabulary chart Observation logs Introduction: Before introduction hang up the vocabulary poster on the white board in front of the class. Alright class last week we got to play with seeds and learn a lot of fun things about seeds. We also learned a lot of new words about seeds. Do you remember any of the words we learned? So the first word is seed do you remember what a seed is? How about soil? And what is a root? So, this week, as you may have guessed by this bucket of dirt, we will be planting seeds. And we also will be decorating our logbooks, what are logbooks? They are what we will use to record everything we observe about our plants. This is my logbook; if you open it up you can see a place for the date, a space to draw what you have seen and lines for you to write down what you have observed. Now I want to show you how we will plant. We will get a cup, put in some soil, how many scoops are we going to put in? Lets count together. Next, we will gently push the soil down, and I will drop my pretend seed right in the middle of the pot. After that I will put some more soil in the pot, lets count the scoops again.

Planting: Patrick McInerny will conduct this portion of the lesson; the steps are as follows. Call the students to Ms. Yangs table one table at a time (Blue table, red table etc.) Have them sit around the table and ask them if they can guide you through the steps to planting the seed. -Take a biodegradable pot -Fill the pot with 6 teaspoons of soil, or until full -Lightly pack the soil -Place a seed in the center of the pot -Scoop 2 additional teaspoons of soil into the pot -Lightly pack the soil -Place nametag in pot -Place pot in greenhouse container (plants will be watered once everyone has finished planting) Be sure to make use of the vocabulary words from the previous week while demonstrating. Have the students plant their seeds then send them back to their table. Logbooks:
